To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for collection, segregation, storage, and disposal of Bio-Medical waste in Animal
House Facility.

SCOPE
2.1
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be
applicable for the collection, segregation, storage, and disposal
of Bio-Medical waste in Animal House Facility.

PROCEDURE
5.1
Collection of
Biomedical Waste
5.1.1 Gloves and mask shall be worn before collecting
biomedical waste in Animal House Facility.
5.1.2 Before collection of bio-waste ensure the category of
biomedical waste.
5.1.3 Segregate the bio-waste as per the currently running version
of annexure no. A…………….
5.1.4 Collect, weigh and keep the inappropriate containers as per
annexure no. A……………..
5.1.5 The bio-waste container shall be kept in the allocated area.
5.1.6 Animal carcass after necropsy/mortality, bedding
material, tissues/fluids/blood, cotton, dressings, etc. (comes under
category 2 and 6) shall be collected in yellow bags/containers. Same shall be
disposed of by burial in the designated pit or incinerated in the designated area. The carcass can be stored in the allocated refrigerator till disposal.
5.1.7 Waste Sharps (needles, syringes, scalpels blades, glass
etc. that may cause puncture and cuts etc.)
(comes under category 4) shall be collected in blue/white bags or
containers. Same shall be either mutilated and deep buried or handed over to authorized
biomedical waste collection agency.
5.1.8 Solid Waste (waste generated from disposable items
other than the waste sharps such as tubing, catheters, intravenous sets /
syringes after destroying etc.) (comes under category 7) shall be collected in
red bags or containers. Same shall be handed over to authorized biomedical
waste collection agency.
5.1.9 Chemical Waste (chemicals used in the production of
biological, chemicals, used in disinfection, as insecticides, drugs, etc.)
(comes under category 10) shall be collected in black bags or containers. Same
shall be disposed of by chemicals treatment using at least 1% hypochlorite
solution or any other equivalent chemical reagent followed by discharge into
drain for liquid & landfill for solids.
5.1.10 Animal bio-waste record shall be documented in current running version format No.: F………………. titled animal bio-waste record.
5.2 Storage of Bio-medical Waste
5.2.1 Storage of biomedical waste must not exceed 48 hours.
5.3 Disposal of Bio-medical Waste
5.3.1 The Bio-medical waste shall be sealed properly to
prevent any leakage/spillage before taking it out through the exit.
5.3.2 Handling and transfer of biomedical waste shall be
carried out by trained designated staff only. The attendant shall ensure that the
bag must be closed properly.
5.3.3 Designated staff shall handover the sealed labeled bag
of biomedical waste to authorized collecting personnel only.
5.3.4 Biomedical waste record shall be documented in current
running version format No.: F…………… titled animal bio-waste record.
