1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this SOP is to establish a procedure for extracting fish liver oil (Halibut Oil) from fish livers. This will ensure that the oil is extracted in a safe and efficient manner.
2.0 Scope
This SOP applies to the extraction of fish liver oil (Halibut Oil) from all types of fish livers.
3.0 Responsibilities
- The Quality Assurance (QA) department is responsible for developing and implementing this SOP.
- The Production department is responsible for conducting the fish liver oil (Halibut Oil) extraction process.
4.0 Equipment and Supplies
- Fish livers
- Blender
- Cheesecloth
- Centrifuge
- Funnel
- Graduated cylinder
- Labels
- Storage container
5.0 Procedure
- Remove the fish livers from the fish and discard any other tissue.
- Rinse the fish livers with cold water.
- Cut the fish livers into small pieces.
- Place the fish liver pieces in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Line a cheesecloth-lined funnel with a second layer of cheesecloth.
- Pour the blended fish liver mixture into the cheesecloth-lined funnel.
- Centrifuge the mixture at 10,000 rpm for 10 minutes.
- Collect the oil that has separated from the water in the centrifuge tube.
- Transfer the oil to a graduated cylinder.
- Label the graduated cylinder with the date and the type of Halibut liver oil (Fish Oil).
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place.
6.0 Acceptance Criteria
The Halibut liver Oil (Fish) should be clear and free of any impurities.
Records
The following records should be maintained:
- A list of the fish livers that have been used to extract the oil
- The results of the oil analysis
- The storage conditions of the oil
Deviations
Any deviations from this SOP should be documented and investigated.
