What is difference between Diet Supplements, Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals

Functional foods are foods that have been modified to provide additional health benefits beyond their basic nutritional value. They may be fortified with nutrients, such as vitamins or minerals, or they may contain naturally occurring compounds that have health-promoting effects. For example, yogurt may be fortified with calcium, or blueberries may contain anthocyanins, which have antioxidant properties.

Dietary supplements are products that are intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients that are not otherwise consumed in sufficient quantities. They may be made from whole foods, isolated nutrients, or synthetic compounds. For example, a multivitamin supplement may contain a variety of vitamins and minerals or a fish oil supplement may contain omega-3 fatty acids.

Nutraceuticals are a subset of dietary supplements that are made from whole foods. They are typically marketed as having health benefits beyond basic nutrition. For example, a nutraceutical product made from blueberries may be marketed as a way to improve cognitive function.

Here are some examples of functional foods:
Yogurt with added probiotics
Cereal with added fiber
Orange juice with added vitamin C
Soybeans with added isoflavones

Here are some examples of dietary supplements:
Vitamin C tablets
Fish oil capsules
Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements
Melatonin tablets

Here are some examples of nutraceuticals:
lycopene in tomatoes
resveratrol in grapes
saponins in soybeans.

In one sentence:
  • Functional foods resemble food and are modified for greater nutritional value. eg. Fortified Atta
  • Dietary supplements resemble drugs and are made from food, isolated nutrients, or food-like substances to support health. eg. Vitamine Capsules or Fish oil Capsules
  • Nutraceuticals are a sector of dietary supplements made only from whole foods to support health.
