1.0 Objective
The objective of this SOP is to outline the
routine and guidelines for rodent breeding in order to ensure the health and
well-being of the rodents involved.
2.0 Scope
This SOP applies to all rodents that are being bred at the facility.

Animal disposal: The process of removing dead
rodents from the facility.
·
Breeding stock: The rodents that are being used
for breeding.
·
Dry bedding: Bedding that does not absorb
moisture.
·
Interchange: The process of switching male and
female breeding stock.
·
Protein supplements: Food additives that contain
protein.
·
Multivitamins: Food additives that contain
vitamins.
·
Pup transfer data: Records of the pups that have
been transferred to new owners.
·
Sex identification: The process of determining
the sex of a pup.
4.0 Routine
The following routine should be followed
for rodent breeding:
·
Daily:
o Check
for dead rodents.
o Clean
cages and water bottles.
o Ensure
that there is enough feed, water, and dry bedding.
·
Fortnightly:
o Interchange
male and female breeding stock.
o Wash
aprons and sleepers.
o Identify
male and female pups.
·
Monthly:
o Isolate pregnant females from the animals kept for breeding.
o Female rats should be isolated for one month after giving birth to allow them to recover and rest. The pups should be separated from the mother for washing and to prevent them from becoming attached to her. The female rats can then be bred again after the isolation period.
·
Other:
o Separate
pups from their mother after 19 days of the weaning period.
o Maintain
breeding room records.
o Keep
daily and weekend records.
o Provide
protein supplements and multivitamins on alternate days and weekends
respectively.
o Manage
pup transfer data.
5.0 Guidelines
The following guidelines should be followed
for rodent breeding:
·
Keep one male with two females for breeding.
·
Females should give birth after 19-22 days.
