1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for the refractive index in oil and fat.
2.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of the refractive index in oil and fat.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
4.0 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Apparatus
4.1.1 Butyrometer /Refractometer
4.2 Glassware
NA
4.3 Reagent
NA
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Wipe and clean the surface
5.2 Drip sample 100μl in the prism.
5.3 Press the start/off switch.
5.4 The refractive index is displayed in numerical characters.
5.5 Repress the start /off switch, so that the refractive index of the sample will be shown on the display blinks three times.
5.6 Note down the reading.
5.7 To turn off the display keep the start/off switch press for about 2 seconds.
6.0 CALCULATION
Temperature correction: Unless the correction factors are specified in the detailed specification.
Approximate correction shall be made using the following equation.
R=R’ +K (T’-T)
Where,
R= the reading of the Butyrometer/Refractometer reduced to the specified temp. (T°C)
R’= the
reading at T’°C
K=
0.55 for fat &0.58 for oils
T’=the
temp. at which the reading R is taken
T= the
specified temp. (Generally 40°C)
