SOP FOR DISPOSAL OF SCRAP FROM LABORATORY


1. PURPOSE

The purpose of the standard is intended to provide disposal of scrap from the laboratory.

2. SCOPE

This procedure is applicable in all laboratories

3. Responsibility

The laboratory head is responsible for supervision. The quality manager is responsible for implementing this procedure. Lab attendants are responsible to perform housekeeping as per the documented procedure.

4. PROCEDURE




4.1 The type of scarp is to be distinguished as solid waste, liquid waste, used reagent bottles, and broken glassware.

4.2 Solid waste like powder (labeled), used papers, etc are to be collected in a dustbin.

4.3 Liquid waste-like solution after analysis is to be collected in a closed vessel and to be sent to the effluent treatment plant for disposal.

4.4 Broken glassware and reagent bottles are to be collected in a separate bin allotted for the same.

4.5 Collected scrap from the bin is to be transferred into a poly bag once a day.

4.6 All the collected scrap is to be deposited in the common scrap area which would be later transferred for destruction.

4.7 Liquid chemical waste shall be flushed down the drainage system after neutralizing using the appropriate chemical neutralizers.

4.8 For the collection of sharp & broken glass and general waste, separate colored bins shall be placed in each room of the laboratory. All laboratory personnel shall be instructed to segregate the waste at the point of collection. For this, an adequate number of dust/waste bins shall be available at designated locations in the laboratory
