1.0 OBJECTIVE

To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for movement and transfer of laboratory animals
in the Animal House Facility.

SCOPE
2.1
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be
applicable for movement and
transfer of laboratory animals in the Animal House Facility.

PROCEDURE
5.1
Movement of
animals in and out of the animal facility
5.1.1 The entry into the small animal facility and exit from
the small animal facility shall be carried out as per the currently running version of the SOP………..
5.1.2
The container containing the caged animals shall be
wiped with disinfectant solution (2.5% concentration or as per manufacture’s
instruction) from outside and taken
inside the animal facility through the main door and then animals shall be kept in
the respective room and send back the same container outside, which shall be
reused for transporting other caged animals for studies, after wiping with
disinfectant solution (2.5% concentration or as per manufacture’s
instruction) and cleaned container shall
be stored in the designated area of the small
animal facility for future use.
5.1.3 For transferring the animals to another area within the
facility, caged animals shall be placed in a clean container, and the container
shall be taken out through the door of the respective room and carried to the main door of the animal facility and taken outside. From there, it shall be
transferred to the respective area within the facility.
5.1.4 Any dead/sick animal/s during transportation shall be
transferred to necropsy/procedure room.
5.2
Transfer of
animals to the Animal Facility from Outside Sources
5.2.1
Animals procured from outside shall be taken to the
animal facility through the main door and then kept in isolation for a prescribed
duration in the separate/quarantine room.
5.2.2 When animals from another animal area of the test
facility are brought in, they shall be routed as above.
5.3 Transfer of
animals to the experimentation room
5.3.1
For transport of animals to experimentation room, the
animals shall be transferred to suitable cages and cages shall be transferred
in suitable trolley.
5.3.2
After the completion of experimentation/necropsy of the procedure, the used container/s shall be sent to the washing area or wiped clean
using disinfectant (2.5% concentration or as per manufacturer's instruction) and
it shall be kept in the designated area.
5.3.3
Water absorbing sheets shall be spread inside the
container if necessary during transport of animals and shall be replaced
whenever damaged or found soiled.
