1.0 OBJECTIVE

To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for the procurement and quarantine of
laboratory animals in Animal
House Facility.

SCOPE
2.1
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be
applicable for procurement and quarantine of animals in Animal House Facility.

PROCEDURE
5.1
Procurement
5.1.1
Animals shall be procured from the
approved/registered source/any other legal source.
5.1.2
Appropriate number of cages shall be sent in the air
conditioned van for procurement of animals under controlled temperature (18 ºC
- 29 ºC) & RH (30% - 70%).
5.1.3
Appropriate information (as required) especially
pertaining to the time of dispatch and time of arrival shall be collected well in
advance by the section In-charge/designee from the supplier.
5.1.4
The quarantine/separate room shall be kept ready
with necessary requisites prior to the arrival of the laboratory animals. If
animals arrive late in the evening (after 7 PM) when the dark cycle starts in the animal facility, emergency light shall be utilized to take these animals to the
respective quarantine/separate room.
5.1.5
The person assigned to care for the animals upon
arrival shall remain at work until they arrive or confirmation is obtained that
they will not arrive until a later date.
5.1.6
During transit feed & water shall be offered to
all animals. Upon arrival, the shipping cage shall be cleaned down with a disinfectant
and taken to the quarantined area.
5.1.7
Before loading / unloading the animals, ensure that
temperature & RH condition are within specified limits.
5.1.8
Alternate clean cage(s) shall be set and ready to
receive the animals.
5.1.9
The animals shall be removed from the container /
cage, one at a time.
5.1.10
The shipping cage shall be removed for cleaning.
5.2
Quarantine
5.2.1
The quarantine
period helps to identify the health status of animals and also helps the new
animal to overcome the stress and shock of the transportation and make them acclimatize
themselves to the new environment, diet and personnel.
5.2.2
As soon as the animals arrive, after checking the
health certificate and necessary documents if provided by the supplier these
animals shall be transferred to a separate/quarantine room and provided with
water. Optionally animal identification shall be done by temporary numbering the system, cage numbers, and labeled cage cards.
5.2.3
The watering and feeding of animals shall be
performed as per the currently running version of the SOP……...
5.2.4
These animals shall be examined thoroughly (by
skilled personnel or veterinarian) after the receipt for external gross abnormalities,
physiological distress, and ill health as per the currently running version of the
SOP……… and observations shall be recorded. If animals are received in the late evening
after 7 PM this examination shall be carried out on the following day. On examination,
if more than 10% of the batch is found affected, the whole batch shall be rejected.
5.2.5
If a physical examination shows any abnormality, the animal shall be isolated and such animal shall not be issued to the study. If the animal (s) show severe signs of pain and distress, as well as being suspected
of any disease or carrier of disease shall be euthanized.
5.2.6
The received animal details shall be entered in the
form titled Animal Procurement Record and Quarantine Record.
5.2.7
Animals shall be numbered with the temporary number on
the tail (rat/mouse) /body (mouse) / inner ear (guinea pig/rabbit) with pen
marker for identification.
5.2.8
The animals shall be weighed on the following day
and thereafter weekly once and weights shall be recorded in Format No. SOP……….
5.2.9
The cage-wise/individual feed consumption shall be
recorded at least weekly once and the record shall be maintained in Format No. SOP……….
5.2.10
Daily observations shall be carried out by the
authorized staff to check the mortality (If any) and also to access the health
status of the received animals. During quarantine, if any animal found dead or
euthanized shall be subjected to necropsy.
5.2.11
Rodents (rat and mouse) and Rabbit shall be
quarantined for one week to one month, before they are merged with existing
stock or issued to the study.
5.2.12
Only authorized staff/designee shall enter in the
quarantine room. Other animals in the small animal facility shall not be
handled after handling these animals.
5.2.13
The quarantine/separate room shall be cleaned
routinely and also after every use as per the currently running version of the
SOP…………
5.2.14
Note: Proper physical
separation (Rack separation and cage separation) shall be used in species
quarantined at a time in the one room.
