SOP FOR WASHING AND SANITIZING IN ANIMAL HOUSE FACILITY | STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR WASHING AND SANITIZING IN ANIMAL HOUSE FACILITY

                   1.0                            OBJECTIVE

1.1                            To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for washing and sanitizing in Animal House Facility.

2.0                            SCOPE

2.1                            This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be for washing and sanitizing in Animal House Facility.

3.0                            RESPONSIBILITY

3.1                            Head- Animal House Facility

3.2                            Attendant- Animal House Facility

                   5.0                            PROCEDURE

5.1                            Washing of cages (except rabbit cages), grills, and water bottles

5.1.1                   Dirty cages, grills, and water bottles shall be brought daily including Sundays and holidays to the wash area. Dirty cages, grills, and water bottles shall be washed first with running tap water, followed by soaking and washing in detergent solution (0.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction) and finally again with running tap water. Water bottle stoppers shall be autoclaved. After washing, these materials shall be shade/air-dried. The air-dried cages, grills , and water bottles shall be exposed to UV light before storage in a designated area for further usage.

5.2                            Cleaning / Sanitization of rabbit cages

5.2.1                       Cages shall be cleaned/sanitized on completion of the study/twice in a month/whenever required or as per study plan. Dirty cages shall be wiped first with hot water to remove the excess debris then with a detergent solution (0.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction,) followed by wiping with a clean cloth soaked in hot water and finally with disinfectant solution (2.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction).

5.2.2                    Cages pans shall be washed daily / as and when required or as per study plan. Cage pans shall be brought to the washing area from the animal room and washed first with running hot tap water, followed by detergent solution (0.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction) and disinfectant solution (2.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction) and finally with running hot tap water. If necessary, the rabbit cage pans shall be washed with dilute hydrochloric acid before washing with a detergent solution to remove the deposits and finally washing with running hot tap water.

5.3                            Cleaning / Sanitization of racks

5.3.1                    Racks shall be cleaned/sanitized on completion of the study/weekly / whenever required or as per the study plan. Racks shall be wiped first with hot water to remove any debris then with a detergent solution (0.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction) followed by wiping with a clean cloth soaked in hot water and finally with disinfectant solution (2.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction).

5.4                            Washing of Plastic bins and buckets

5.4.1                    Buckets shall be washed in detergent solution followed by washing with running tap water once a week. Washing of feed containers (to offer feed to animals) shall be carried out when it becomes empty or once in a week as mentioned above. Washing of plastic bins used for storage of bedding material, feed, etc., shall be carried out monthly once or as and when necessary as mentioned above. They shall be shade/air-dried and transferred to a designated area.

5.5                            Washing of Storage feed containers

5.5.1                    Storage feed containers shall be brought monthly to the wash area. Storage feed containers shall be washed first with running tap water, followed by soaking and washing in detergent solution (0.5% or as per manufacturer’s instruction) and finally again with running tap water. They shall be shade/air-dried, sterilized under UV light, and transferred to a designated area.
