1.1 To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for watering and feeding of animals in Animal House Facility

applicable to watering and feeding of
animals in Animal House Facility.

PROCEDURE
5.1
Designated/authorized
staff shall make an entry into the small animal facility and exit from a small animal the facility as per the procedures described in the current version of SOP……….
5.2
Watering of Animals
5.2.1 Water
bottles filled with fresh purified water shall be given to animals every day,
or as and when necessary. Water passed through a water purifier shall be used for
filling the water bottles. The filled water bottles shall be taken to the
respective test/animal rooms on a trolley /tray. The used water bottles shall
be replaced from the animal cages from left to right starting from the upper
row first and water bottles shall be placed on the animal cages from left to
right starting from the upper row.
5.2.2 Water
bottles shall be checked 2-3 times daily to ensure that the animals have access
to fresh purified water all the time.
5.2.3 In case
of any water bottle/s found leaky /damaged / half-filled, it shall be replaced
with a new water bottle.
5.2.4 Water
bottle and stoppers shall be washed once weekly or as and when required.
5.2.5 Record of water offered to animals shall be documented in the format No. F...............
5.3 Feeding
5.3.1 After
receiving, feed shall be stored in Stainless steel (SS) container (for
non-sterile feed). Feed shall be transferred to sterilized SS container after
sterilization (as per SOP......).
5.3.2 The
designated/authorized staff of the respective room shall take the feed from the
labeled sterilized feed storage bin bearing the batch number of feed-in use (if
applicable), and the feed shall be transferred to a clean labeled Feed Offering
Container and taken to the respective test/animal room for feeding the animals.
5.3.3 The feed
shall be filled up in each feed hopper using a feed scoop (spoon) working in a
systematic manner from left to right starting from the upper row (Rodents) or
from top to bottom of the cages. When all cages are filled, the feed container
shall be kept in the designated area in the storage room. Optionally feed
offered to individual cages shall be weighed as and when required or as per the study plan.
5.3.4 The feed
storage container and the food scoop shall be sanitized on a monthly basis. A
record shall be maintained as per Format No.:-F/SOP/AHF/011/01-00.
5.3.5 Feed
shall be checked for the presence of moisture or contaminants before offering to
animals.
5.3.6 If a
supplemental diet (i.e. lettuce, carrots, seeds, etc.) is indicated, same shall
be placed in the proper amount in a site where an animal (s) has ready access to an item
(s).
