SOP FOR WEIGHING OF LABORATORY ANIMALS | STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR WEIGHING OF LABORATORY ANIMALS

 

1.0                            OBJECTIVE

1.1                            To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for recording/documentation of body weight of laboratory animals.

2.0                            SCOPE

2.1                            This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be applicable recording/documentation of body weight of laboratory animals.

3.0                            RESPONSIBILITY

3.1                            Head / Study Director / All Personnel involved in weighing of laboratory animals.

4.0                            DEFINITIONS

4.1                            Nil

5.0                            PROCEDURE

5.1                            Check the calibration status of the balance and ensure the weighing balance is calibrated before starting the procedure.

5.2                            Switch “ON” the weighing balance.

5.3                            Identify the required cage number and gently shift the cage from the cage rack and place it on the working bench near the weighing balance.

5.4                            Remove the water bottle from the cage and open the lid without disturbing the animals.

5.5                            Place the weighing bowl on the balance and gently press the “TARE” key and wait till the display reads “0”.

5.6                            Identify the animal and gently hold it and place it into the weighing bowl.    

5.7                            Allow the reading to stabilize on the display and then record the actual weight.

5.8                            Gently lift the animal from the weighing bowl and place it in autoclaved/fresh cage.

5.9                            Clean the weighing bowl to clear off any animal waste.

5.10                        Follow the steps as mentioned in section 4.5 to section 4.9 for weighing the rest of the animals from the cage.

5.11                        After completion, transfer all the animals from the autoclaved/fresh cage to its home cage, close the cage lid and place the cage back to its original place in the rack.

5.12                        For the weighing of all animals for a particular study follow the step as mentioned in section 4.3 to section 4.11.

5.13                        Switch “OFF” the balance and clean the balance and work area after completion of weighing of all the animals.

                  5.13.1                   Update the weighing balance log book.

                  5.13.2                   Maintain the body weight record of animals in Format No. F……………...
