To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for changing cages and
bedding material in Animal House Facility.

This SOP shall be applicable to changing cages and bedding material in Animal House Facility.

PROCEDURE
5.1
Procedure for changing rodent cages
5.1.1
Designated/authorized
staff shall make an entry into the animal facility and exit from the animal facility as
per the procedures described in the currently running version of SOP……….
5.1.2
Staff
shall collect cages and fill with sufficient quantity of sterilized bedding
material from sterilized husk container placed in designated area. Following
this, cages shall be stacked one above the other and transferred to the
respective animal rooms. Also, the grills shall be collected and transferred to
the respective test/animal room in the same manner.
5.1.3
One cage
at a time shall be removed from the rack from left to right starting from the
upper rows first.
5.1.4
Cage
shall be removed from the rack and placed on a stool/table. The water bottle
shall be removed and placed on the floor / table.
5.1.5
The
grill of the cage shall be opened and animal(s) from the cage shall be
transferred gently into the cage containing bedding material, placed on another
stool. Cage grill shall be replaced and cage card shall be attached to the
replaced grill.
5.1.6
The remaining feed from the unclean cage grill shall be transferred to the
respective cage grill.
5.1.7
The cage
shall be placed on the rack after closing with the grill. The same sequence of
events shall be followed for the other cages.
5.1.8
Animal
bedding change record shall be documented in the format No.: F……………… entitled “Day
Book Record”.
5.1.9
The
staff shall then collect the used water bottles from the respective rooms in a
plastic basin/bucket and take them to the wash area. The used cages and grills
shall also be carried to the wash area and dirty bedding to the waste
collection bins kept in designated areas.
5.1.10
Cages on
the rack shall be rotated weekly once sequentially from top to bottom i.e. top
row cages shall be placed in the lower most row of rack and second row cages
shall be moved to top row likewise other rows cages shall be rotated by
removing only one cage at a time to get uniform exposure to the light source.
5.1.11
The
cages and grills shall be changed weekly once or as and when required or as per
study plan.
5.1.12
Bedding
material (corn cobs/paddy husk) shall be dried first if moist and sterilized
using UV sterilizer.
5.1.13 Sterilized
bedding material (corn cobs / paddy husk) shall be transferred to cages as per
the above mentioned procedure weekly twice or as and when required or as per
study plan.
5.2
Procedure for changing rabbit cages
5.2.1
Cage pan
located in runners beneath the cage grill shall be withdrawn and shall be sent
to the washing area. Cage pan shall be washed/changed at least once daily or as
and when required or as per the study plan.
5.2.2
Rabbit
Cages shall be changed twice in a month or as and when required or as per the study
plan.
5.3
Procedure for guinea pig housing compartments
5.3.1 Guinea
pig bedding shall be changed weekly once or as and when required or as per the study plan. Animals shall be taken out gently from the compartment and soiled
bedding material shall be collected in the collecting bin. The compartment shall be
wiped with disinfectant solution and fresh sterilized bedding material shall be
replaced. Animals shall be placed back to the compartment and feed and water shall
be offered.
