1.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of Loss on drying by oven drying method.
2.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of the document is to establish a method for determination of Loss on drying by Oven drying method.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
4.0 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Apparatus
4.1.1 Analytical Balance.
4.1.2 Hot air oven.
4.2 Glassware
4.2.1 Petri dish.
4.3 Reagen. N.A.
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Dry the evaporating dish for 30 minutes under the same conditions to be employed in the determination.
5.2 Place about 5 to 10 g of the sample accurately weighed in a tared evaporating dish.
5.3 Put the sample in a hot air oven previously maintained at 1050C for 3 hours.
5.4 Take the sample out of the oven and put it in the desiccators with the lid on.
5.5 Continue the drying, cooling, and weighing at half an hour intervals until the difference between two successive weighings corresponds to not more than 0.25 percent.
5.6 Record the lower mass obtained and calculate the loss on drying.
M1-M2
Loss on drying, %(w/w) = --------------×100
M1-M
Where,
M = Weight of Empty dish
M1= Weight of dish + sample
M2= Weight of the dish with sample after drying
