1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for the determination of specific gravity.
2.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of specific gravity.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
4.0 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Apparatus
4.1.1 Thermostatically controlled water bath
4.2 Glassware
4.2.1 Specific gravity bottle with Thermometer
4.3 Reagents: NA
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Clean and thoroughly dry the Specific gravity bottle and weigh it.
5.2 Fill it up to mark with freshly boiled and cooled distilled water & weigh (maintained at 27+1°C).
5.3 Remove the water, dry it & fill it with a sample (at the same temp.) and weigh it again.
Note: For oil and fat temp. 30.0 + 0.2°C. or 95+ 0.2°C &for honey 27+1°C.
6.0 CALCULATION
Specific gravity at 27° C = C-A/B-A
Where,
C = mass of specific gravity bottle with sample
(in g)
A = mass of empty specific gravity bottle (in
g)
B = mass of specific gravity bottle with water (in g)
