SOP FOR CLEANING OF GLASSWARE


1. PURPOSE

The purpose of the standard is intended to provide instruction for the cleaning of glassware.

2. SCOPE

This procedure is applicable for cleaning glassware for different use in the laboratory.

3. RESPONSIBILITY

The Quality Control Chemist and Laboratory Attendant are responsible for following this procedure.

The section In-charge/Technical Manager/Quality Manager is responsible for implementing this
 procedure.


 

4. PROCEDURE

4.1 Preparation of cleaning Solutions.

For the cleaning of glassware, those are used for chemical analysis special precautions will take place to avoid any chemical residue in glassware, which may later interfere with the results of the chemical analysis. The following cleaning solutions were used for cleaning glassware.

A) 0.5% Labolene- Measure 5 ml labolene and add it to the container containing 995 ml of purified water and stir it well. For better results use hot water. Record the solution preparation details in the glassware cleaning solution preparation record.

B) 2% Liquid soap solution- Measure 2 ml liquid soap and add it to the container containing 98 ml of purified water and stir it well. For better results use hot water. Record the solution preparation details in the glassware cleaning solution preparation record.

4.2 Cleaning of new glassware.

4.2.1 Rinse the glassware with tap water followed by purified water.

4.2.2 Soak the glassware in dilute sodium hydroxide solution for 5 minutes and rinse with purified water. Rinse with dilute hydrochloric acid. Wait for 5 minutes and then rinse with plenty of tap water, followed by purified water.

4.2.3 Dry the glassware in the oven at not more than 50°C. Most new glassware is slightly alkaline in reaction.

4.2.4 For the Precision chemical test, new glassware should be soaked for several hours in acid water (1% solution hydrochloric acid or nitric acid) before washing.

4.3 Cleaning of Glassware in routine analysis

4.3.1 Soak the glassware with plenty of tap water for one hour.

4.3.2 Wash with 2% liquid soap solution or 0.5% Labolene solution rinse the glassware with plenty of tap water. For general cleaning 2%, liquid soap solution may be used when Labolene is not available.

4.3.3 For cleaning of glassware such as bottles, flasks, beakers, test tubes, etc. use 0.5% Labolene. For better results use hot water.

4.3.4 Rinse 3 to 4 times with laboratory-grade distilled water.

4.3.5 Ensure that there is no presence of stagnant water in the glassware.

4.3.6 Cleaning of glassware, which has contained hazardous material, must be solely undertaken by experienced personnel.

4.3.7 Wash glassware as quickly as possible after use if it is not possible then the articles should be allowed to soak in water.

4.3.8 During the washing all parts of the article should be thoroughly scrubbed with a brush selected for the shape and size of the glassware.

4.3.9 Brushes should always be in good condition to avoid any abrasion of the glassware.

4.3.10 Special types of precipitate material may require removal with nitric acid, aquaria, or fuming sulphuric acid. These are very corrosive substances and should be used only when required.

4.3.11 Before cleaning of glassware remove the labeling of the marker pen with the help of IPA or acetone. For plastic glassware do not use acetone for marker pen labeling.

4.3.12 It is imperative that all soap detergents and other cleaning fluids be removed from glassware before use.

4.3.13 After cleaning dry the glassware in Hot air at 600C ± 50 C.

4.3.14 Always protect clean glassware from dust by use of temporary closures or by placing it in a dust-free cabinet.

4.4 Glassware used for critical analysis

4.4.1 Rinse the glassware with a dilute nitric acid solution (2%).

4.4.2 Allow it to soak for 5 minutes.

4.4.3 Rinse with plenty of tap water.

4.4.4 Rinse 3 or 4 times with distilled water.

4.4.5 Ensure cleanliness by visual checking.

4.5 Glassware used for Heavy Metal & Teflon tube

4.5.1 Rinse the glassware & Teflon tube with tap water followed by demineralized water.

4.5.2 Rinse the glassware & Teflon tube with Millipore water.

4.5.3 Soak the glassware & Teflon tube in Millipore water for 5-10 minutes.

4.5.4 Rinse and soak with 2% Nitric acid for 5 minutes

4.5.5 Dry the glassware & Teflon tube in oven at not more than 50°C & 10-15 min.

4.6 Cleaning of specific types of glassware.

4.6.1 Pipettes

4.6.1.1 Soak overnight in water and run tap water over and through them until all traces of dirt are removed.

4.6.1.2 Soak the pipettes in purified water for at least one hour.

4.6.1.3 Remove from the purified water, dry outside with a cloth, shake out the water and dry in a hot air oven.

4.6.1.4 After drying, place pipettes in a dust-free drawer.

4.6.2 Burettes

4.6.2.1 Rinse with tap water until all the dirt is removed. Then rinse with purified water and dry.

4.6.2.2 Wash the stopcock key separately. Before the stopcock keys are not interchangeable.

4.6.2.3 Always cover burettes when not in use.
