1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for moisture by vacuum oven method.
2.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of moisture by the vacuum oven method.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
4.0 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Apparatus
4.1.1 Vacuum oven (60-70°C at not more than 50 mm of mercury).
4.2 Glassware
4.2.1 Flat bottom aluminum dish (Dia -7 cm to 8 cm & Depth-not more than 2.5 cm).
4.2.2 Sand: Passed through 500-micron sieve but retained on 180-micron IS Sieve. (Digested with conc. HCl washed with water till acid-free, dried, and ignited).
4.3 Reagent: NA
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Heat a flat bottom dish containing 20 g prepared sand & stirring rod in a vacuum oven for 1 hr.
5.2 Allow to cool down in desiccator.
5.3 Weigh it as an empty dish.
5.4 Now weigh accurately 2g of sample into the dish.
5.5 Add 5 ml of distilled water to the dish.
5.6 Thoroughly mix sand with the sample by stirring with a glass rod.
5.7 Place the dish in a water bath for 30min. Wipe the bottom of the dish and transfer it with the glass rod to the vacuum oven maintained at the temp.60–700C (pressure not more than 50mm of Hg) After 2 hrs, take out the dish; place it in a desiccator cool and weigh.
5.8 Repeat the process of heating; cooling and weighing after every 1 hour, till consecutive weighing do not differ by more than 0.5 mg.
6.0 CALCULATION
Moisture (% by mass) =
(M1
– M2) x 100
M1
– M
Where,
M1 = Weight of the dish before
drying (in g)
M2 = Weight of the dish after
drying (in g)
M = Weight of the empty dish with sand and
glass rod (in g)
