STP FOR DETERMINATION OF BELLIER TURBIDITY TEMPERATURE

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for the bellies' turbidity temperature test.

2.0 SCOPE

This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of the bellied turbidity temperature test.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Apparatus

4.1.1 Analytical Balance

4.1.2 Water Bath

4.1.3 Heating Mantle

4.1.4 Air condenser

4.1.5 Thermometer

4.2 Glassware

4.2.1 Round bottom flask-100ml

4.2.2 Pipette-5ml,1ml

4.2.3 Nessler cylinder

4.2.4 Measuring cylinder-50ml

4.2.5 Test tube

4.3 Reagent

4.3.1 Ethanol -70%(70 ml ethanol add 30 ml water)

4.3.2 Alcohol KOH solution- (4.25 g KOH dissolve in 95% ethanol and volume make up to 50 ml with 95% ethanol(1.5N)

4.3.3 Dilute acetic acid(in 1 ml acetic acid add 2 ml water and dissolve it)

4.3.4 Phenolphthalein indicator

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Take 1 ml oil sample and add 5 ml of alcoholic KOH solution.

5.2 Saponify completely by heating over a boiling using a reflux condenser & shake it properly.

5.3 Complete saponification usually takes about 10 min.

5.4 Cool it down.

5.5 Add 3-4 drops of phenolphthalein indicator.

5.6 Add sufficient acetic acid to neutralize the sample & then add 0.4 ml accurately measured.

5.7 Add 50 ml 70% alcohol.

5.8 Transfer the solution to a 10x2.5 cm diameter test tube (50 ml).

5.9 Transfer test tubes to a hot water beaker and maintain the solution temp. 50°C.

5.10 Then cool to room temperature at till 40°C.

5.11 Note down turbidity temperature.

5.12 Place the nessler cylinder 10x2.5 cm diameter test tube (50 ml) in a beaker and maintain temp.15°.

5.13 Shake the solution till turbidity appears.

5.14 Note down temp.
