The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for natural essential oil (as allyl isothiocyanate) in oil.
2.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of natural essential oil(as allyl isothiocyanate (C4H5NS)in oil.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
4.0 REQUIREMENTS
4.1Apparatus

4.2.1 Conical flask-250 ml
4.2.2 Round bottom flask-500 ml
4.2.3 Pipette-10 ml & 25 ml
4.2.4 Measuring cylinder-100 ml
4.2.5 Kjeldahl flask
4.2.6 Burette-50 ml
4.3Reagent
4.3.1 Ethanol -70%
4.3.2 Silver Nitrate-0.1N
4.3.3 Ammonium Hydroxide solution-10%
4.3.4 Ferric ammonium sulfate indicator
4.3.5 Standard ammonium thiocyanate solution-0.1N
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1Take a 5 g sample in Kjeldahl flask
5.2 Add 25 ml ethanol 95%.
5.3 Add 250 ml of water and some glass beads.
5.4 Distill the mixture in steam and collect as distillate in a 200 ml measuring flask.
5.5 In the receiver flask take 25 ml of AgNO3 0.1N and 10 ml of ammonium hydroxide solution.
5.6 Collect as rapidly as possible about 150 ml of distillate.
5.7 Attach the reflux air condenser to the measuring flask and heat the mixture for about 1 hour in a boiling water bath.
5.8 Cool to room temperature.
5.9 Add water to make up 200 ml in a volumetric flask and filter the contents after shaking.
5.10 Take 100 ml of the filtrate and 6 ml HNO3.
5.11 Add a few drops of ammonium sulfate indicator.
5.12 Titrate with standard ammonium thiocyanate solution.
5.13 Note down the reading.
