STP FOR DETERMINATION OF CHLORIDE IN SOAP

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for the determination of chloride in soap.

2.0 SCOPE

This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of chloride (as NaCl) in soap.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Apparatus

4.1.1 Analytical balance

4.1.2 Water bath

4.2 Glassware

4.2.1 Beaker-250 ml

4.2.2 Volumetric Flask-250 ml

4.3 Reagent

4.3.1 Calcium nitrate:(20%m/v)

4.3.2 Methyl orange: Dissolve 0.1 g in 100 ml of 95% ethanol

4.3.3 Nitric acid:1N

4.3.4 Potassium di chromate:5% in aqueous

4.3.5 Silver nitrate:0.1N

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Take 10g of sample and dissolve in hot distilled water in a 250ml beaker.

5.2 Add 20 ml of calcium nitrate solution.

5.3 Mix thoroughly and cool down.

5.4 Filter with 1 no. Filter paper into a 250 ml volumetric flask.

5.5 Wash the filter to free it from chlorides using water allowing the washing to run into the flask.

5.6 Till get chloride free.

5.7 Now, to check chloride free use 1-2ml silver nitrate solution.

5.8 If a clear solution is obtained then it is chloride free.

5.9 Shake the flask and the content & dilute to the mark.

5.10 Take 100ml of this solution.

5.11 Add a few drops of methyl orange indicator and neutralize with dilute nitric acid (1N).

5.12 Using potassium dichromate as an indicator

5.13 Titrate it with 0.1N silver nitrate solution.

5.14 Till color changes to brick red.

5.15 For blank, use the same quantity of all reagents except the sample.

6.0 CALCULATION

Chlorides (as NaCl ) %by mass = 14.6 x(S-B)x N

S= Vol. in ml of 0.1N Silver Nitrate solution required for the sample

B= Vol. in ml of 0.1N Silver Nitrate solution required for the blank

N= Normality of 0.1N Silver Nitrate solution

M= Mass of the sample taken for the test, in g
