Standard Operating Procedure for the Handling and Cleaning of Glassware
1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 To outline the procedures to be followed for the proper
handling and cleaning of glassware.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This SOP applies to all personnel working in the
laboratory.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 All personnel in the department are responsible for the
implementation of this SOP.
4.0 DISTRIBUTION
4.1 The Quality Assurance department is responsible for
maintaining the SOP 'Master Copy,' which is approved by the Quality
Manager.
4.2 A ‘Control Copy’ of the SOP will be distributed to
relevant departments and placed near related equipment/instruments, if
required.

6.0 PROCEDURE
6.1 Handling of Glassware
6.1.1 New glassware received should be inspected for
defects. Any broken glassware should be returned to the supplier.
6.1.2 Store glassware in appropriate cabinets.
6.1.3 Issue glassware as needed.
6.1.4 Glassware requiring calibration should be calibrated
prior to issuance and use.
6.1.5 Record calibration results in the appropriate log.
6.2 Preparation of Washing Solution
6.2.1 Ensure the sink and drain are free of obstructions so
water can flow and drain freely.
6.2.2 Place a large beaker or plastic wash tub in the main
laboratory sink. (Avoid washing glassware in small bench-side sinks).
6.2.3 Prepare the washing solution by mixing 10ml of
powdered soap per liter of hot tap water in the wash vessel.
6.2.4 Stir until the soap is completely dissolved.
6.2.5 Fill a second large beaker or plastic wash tub with
warm tap water for rinsing.
6.3.1 Adhere to all chemical disposal protocols before
washing the glassware.
6.3.2 Properly dispose of any chemicals in the
glassware.
6.3.3 If chemicals are safe to be poured down the drain,
flush them with plenty of tap water.
6.3.4 Dispose of any solid chemicals by wrapping them in a
paper towel and placing them in the trash.
6.3.5 Remove all labels from the glassware and dispose of
them appropriately.
6.3.6 Rinse the glassware with hot tap water and place it in
the washing vessel.
6.4 Washing Glassware
6.4.1 Use the appropriate size test tube brush and soapy
water to carefully clean the glassware, ensuring all substances are
removed.
6.4.2 Rinse the glassware thoroughly in the tap water rinse
tub.
6.4.3 Rinse the glassware thoroughly with distilled water,
taking care to avoid splashing by controlling the water flow.
6.4.4 Hang the glassware on a drying rack near the sink to
air dry.
7.0 PRECAUTIONS
7.1 Any chipped or cracked glassware must be disposed of in
the glass waste container located in the lab.
7.2 If the glassware does not fit on the drying rack, place a paper towel on the bench and set the item upside down either in a test tube rack or a large beaker.

8.2.1 Format-I: Document History Sheet
9.1 Maintain the revision history of the SOP or document using Format- as per SOP/QAD/001. The history should be kept alongside the current version of the SOP.
