STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR CLEANING AND SANITATION IN ANIMAL FACILITY


1.0 OBJECTIVE

1.1 To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for cleaning and sanitation in Animal House Facility.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be applicable to cleaning and sanitation procedure adopted in Animal House Facility.

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Cleaning the test/animal rooms

5.1.1 Brooming

5.1.1.1 Designated/authorized staff shall make entry in to small animal facility and exit from small animal facility as per the procedures described in the current running version of SOP/AHF/..........

5.1.1.2 Designated/authorized staff, shall wear apron, head cover, face mask, gloves and shoe-cover and enter into the animal facility after spraying the disinfectant solution kept at the entry below the shoe cover and shall collect bucket, broom stick, mop sticks and dust pan etc.

5.1.1.3 Then designated staff shall enter into the test/animal room, broom (by which time the designated / authorized staff of the respective room would have replaced the old bedding) and waste shall be collected in the dust pan and then transferred to the dust bin.

5.1.1.4 The staff shall then make an exit from test/animal room and take up cleaning in the next room in the similar fashion.

5.1.1.5 The corridor / passages shall be broomed by the staff at last after the completion of brooming in all the rooms.

5.1.2 Preparation of disinfectant solutions

5.1.2.1 Commercially available disinfectants (Chloroxylenol / Chlorhexidine etc.) shall be used.

5.1.2.2 The designated staff shall prepare 2.5% disinfectant solution (25 milliliter in one liter of water) for mopping and for foot spray or as per manufacturer’s instruction.

5.1.2.3 The foot spray containing disinfectant solution shall be kept at the entry of the animal facility for spraying below the shoe cover. It shall be refilled whenever necessary. The spray bottle shall be washed once in a week.

5.1.2.4 The spray bottle shall be Labeled properly with the following details (F/SOP/AHF/SOP NO/03-00):

5.1.3 Mopping

5.1.3.1 Following completion of watering and feeding in all rooms, the designated staff shall start mopping with disinfectant solution.

5.1.3.2 On completion of brooming, the staff shall pick up the mop stick meant for disinfectant use and dip the same in the prepared disinfectant solution and squeeze to remove excess solution and then start mopping as outlined in brooming procedure. Designated staff shall rinse the mop in plain water before dipping the mop in the disinfectant solution subsequently.

5.1.3.3 Following the above, the designated/authorized staff shall mop the entire corridor/passages and then move to the wash area along with cleaning materials and wash the mop stick, dust pan and bucket with detergent solution and finally through running tap water and sun/shade/air dried it.

Note: Record of general cleaning and sanitization shall be documented in the current running version of format No- F/SOP/AFC/010/01-00. The entire above mentioned operations shall be executed during the forenoon of everyday, including Sunday, holidays and whenever required. Further, vacant animal rooms shall also be subjected to brooming and mopping on all days.

5.2 General cleaning procedures for walls, ceilings, glass panes, doors, tables, stools, cage racks, and lights

5.2.1 Cleaning shall be carried out once in a week or whenever it is necessary, the designated staff shall clean the walls, glass panes, tables, stools and doors in the afternoon. Ceilings shall be cleaned by dusting with dusting stick when the room is vacant.

5.2.2 The walls, tables, stools and doors shall be wiped and cleaned with 2.5% disinfectant solution, impregnated in a sponge or cloth.

5.2.3 The cleaning of stools shall be carried out as mentioned above.

5.2.4 Electrical lights (tubes/bulbs) shall be removed once in a month, wiped with 2.5% disinfectant solution and replaced.

5.2.5 When the room becomes vacant, cleaning of floor, walls, ceilings, glass panes, tables, stools and doors shall be done as mentioned above. Finally, the room shall be fumigated by using Virosil Pharma (Hyrogen Peroxide - 10 % and Silver Nitrate - 0.01%) or potassium permanganate Formalin mixer (Adding 35 mL of formalin (40 percent formaldehyde) to 10 g potassium permanganate. If the room is left for longer period without any experiment, the same operation shall be repeated a day before the start of the next study in the test room. Records for fumigation shall be maintained in Format No. F/SOP/AHF/00/02-01.

5.3 Cleaning of wash area

5.3.1 The wash area in the facility shall be washed after the day’s work daily and the particles collected near the drain shall be removed and transferred in the waste collection bin kept at the vicinity of the small animal facility.
