animals.

This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be
applicable for clipping and shaving of fur in experimental
animals in Animal House
Facility.

PROCEDURE
5.1
Fur Clipping
5.1.1
Clipping of rat and
mice
5.1.1.1
Clipping shall be performed approximately 24 h before
the start of the experiment or as required by the study plan.
5.1.1.2
Take one animal from the respective cage. Anesthetize the
animal lightly with ether.
5.1.1.3
Place the anesthetized animal ventrally or dorsally in
straight position for clipping.
5.1.1.4
Now with the help of an electric clipper/ shaver, clip the
desired area of the animal to cover an approximately desired area as per the study
plan / guidelines.

Keep the clipped animal back to the respective cage for
recovery from anesthesia.
5.1.1.6
Enter the clipping details in the current running version
of F……………….
5.1.1.7
Take the next identified animal and repeat the steps as
described in 4.1.1.2 to 4.1.1.6.
5.1.2
Clipping of
Rabbit
5.1.2.1
Clipping shall be performed approximately 24 h before
the start of the experiment or as required by the study plan.
5.1.2.2
Take one rabbit out from the respective cage.
5.1.2.3
Place the rabbit dorsally in the straight position for
clipping.
5.1.2.4
Now with the help of an electric clipper/shaver, clip the
desired area of the animal to cover an approximately desired area as per study plan
/ guidelines.

Enter the clipping details in the current running version
of F……………….

Keep the clipped animal back to respective cages
5.1.2.7 Take the next identified animal and repeat the steps described in 4.1.2.2 to 4.1.2.6.
5.2 Fur Shaving
5.2.1
Shaving shall be performed approximately 24h before the
start of experiment or as required by study plan.
5.2.2
Take one animal from the respective cage. Anesthetize the
animal lightly with ether.
5.2.3
Place the anesthetized animal ventrally or dorsally in straight
position for clipping.
5.2.4
Trim the fur/hair of the animal with the help of electric
clipper or scissors without harming the animal skin.
5.2.5
Avoid cutting or injury to the animal.
5.2.6
Wipe the desired area with warm sterile water using
cotton swab to make fur smooth for shaving.
5.2.7
With help of an electric shaver or razor shave the desired
area of the animal to cover an approximately desired area as per study plan /
guidelines.
5.2.8
Take the next identified animal and repeat the steps
described in 4.2.2 to 4.2.8.
