1.0 OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for operation of Melting Point
Apparatus
2.0
SCOPE
This SOP shall be applicable to the Melting Point apparatus used
in QC Dept.

RESPONSIBILITY
3.1
Chemist QC and above
shall be responsible for the preparation and execution of this SOP
3.2
Sr. Chemist QC & above
and QA Head shall be responsible for the checking and approval of this
SOP.

5.0
PROCEDURE
5.1
Cleaning
5.1.1
Ensure that power supply to the Melting Point
apparatus is switched
‘OFF’ before cleaning and plug shall be removed from the socket.
5.1.2
Melting Point apparatus shall be kept on a clean table/platform.
5.1.3
Platform of Melting Point apparatus shall be wiped with a dry lint the free cloth on a daily basis so that there will be no dust particles on the Melting
Point apparatus
5.2
Operation
5.2.1
Ensure that the thermometer shall be kept in the bigger
groove provided on the top panel.
5.2.2
Ensure that the capillary tube filled with sample shall be
keep in any of the three grooves provided on the top panel.
5.2.3
Ensure that the instrument shall be connected to the mains and switch
is “ON”.
5.2.4
Ensure that the Toggle switch shall be “ON” and the red lamp
glows.
5.2.5 Ensure for the adjustment of Toggle “HEATER LOW / HIGH” switch
as per the desired temperature (up to 150 o C toggle at “LOW”)
5.2.6
Ensure that the “INCREASE TEMPERATURE”
knob shall be rotated in the clockwise direction to set the temperature.
5.2.7
Ensure that the temperature shall be noted at which the sample
starts melting and ultimately melts completely i.e. Melting point and melting range respectively.
5.2.8
Ensure that Toggle switch shall be “OFF” after completion of
analysis.
5.2.9
Ensure that the mains Switch
shall be “OFF”.
5.2.10 Ensure that the thermometer
and capillary tube shall be taken out from the grooves.
5.2.11 Calibration Procedure
Calibration of Melting
Point apparatus shall be done by external
party on annual frequency
