5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Operating Procedure

5.1.1 Connect the inlet of the CO2 euthanasia chamber to the CO2 cylinder.

5.1.2 Animals are placed into chambers so that they have sufficient floor space and are not overcrowded.

5.1.3 CO2 delivery is accomplished by turning the CO2 cylinder valve and flow meter on so that animal (s) is slowly exposed to increasing levels of CO2 at the following flow rates.

5.2 Gas flow may be increased as loss of consciousness is observed and flow should be maintained for at least one minute after apparent clinical death (e.g., cessation of cardiovascular and respiratory movements).

5.3 Chambers/lids must be cleaned/dried between animals or groups of animals to minimize odors that might distress animals prior to euthanasia.

5.4 Animals shall be euthanized in isolated Euthanasia room as per standard method prescribed in SOP…………..

Note:-

§ Only animals of the same species should be placed into a chamber at any time.

§ Incomplete filling of the chamber can induce some animals to try to avoid exposure by climbing or jumping which appears distressful.

§ Neonatal rodents are resistant to CO2 induced euthanasia.

§ High CO2 concentrations may be distressful to some animals.

§ Sudden exposure to high concentrations of CO2 may be distressful to some species. Pre-filling the CO2 chamber is no longer recommended

§ CO2 delivery to the chamber is accomplished by turning the CO2 cylinder valve and flow meter on so that animal(s) are slowly exposed to increasing levels of CO2.
