SOP FOR OPERATION OF ABC TYPE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 To lay down the procedure for ABC-type fire extinguishers on Company Premises.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 This process shall be applicable for ABC-type fire extinguishers at the Production Unit, Haridwar.




3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 HR Officer and above shall be responsible for the preparation & execution of this SOP.

3.2 HR and QA shall be responsible for the review of this SOP.

3.3 HR Head and QA Head shall be responsible to ensure the compliance of the procedure and implementation of this SOP respectively.

5.0 DEFINITION (S) &

5.1 Definitions:

5.1.1 Fire extinguishers with a Class A rating are effective against fires involving paper, wood, textiles, and plastics. The primary chemical used to fight these fires is mono ammonium phosphate, because of its ability to smother fires in these types of materials.

7.0 PROCEDURE

7.1 Application

7.1.1 ABC Dry powder type fire extinguishers are suitable for tackling Petroleum fires, solvent fires, gas fires, fires in electrical equipment, and controlling surface fires in textiles fibers. This type of fire extinguisher is more effective than the DCP-type fire extinguisher due to the superior quality of Mono Ammonium Phosphate based powder filled in it.

7.1.2 Identification number should display on every fire extinguisher.

7.2 Method of Operation

7.2.1 Before operating the extinguisher ensure that the pressure gauge needle is in the green zone.

7.2.2 Pull out the safety pin from the valve.

7.2.3 Press control valve & squeeze valve.

7.2.4 Direct discharge at the base of flame with a rapid sweeping motion

7.2.5 Note the direction of the wind; ensure that powder does not fall on the operator

7.2.6 After use, the empty fire extinguisher shall be transferred to the pump house and labeled as “EMPTY”

7.2.7 From the pump house empty fire extinguisher shall be transferred to an external agency for refilling

7.3 Care & Maintenance

7.3.1 Internal verification of fire extinguishers shall be monthly (in the first week of the month) for the following.

7.3.2 Checking the physical condition of the extinguishers.

7.3.3 Check the pressure of the cylinder on the pressure gauge; it should be in the green zone.

7.3.4 Checking the hosepipe, nozzle outlet & vents holes. Check the plunger.

7.3.5 Checking of cleaning and mounting of the extinguisher.

7.3.6 External verification of fire extinguisher shall be done after every three months for the following

7.3.7 Checking the physical condition of the extinguishers.

7.3.8 Check the pressure of the cylinder on the pressure gauge; it should be in the green zone.

7.3.9 Checking the hosepipe, nozzle outlet & vents hole. Check the plunger.

7.3.10 Checking inside the powder for granulation & choking.

7.3.11 Refilling of used extinguishers shall be arranged by the SHE department.

7.4 Safety Precautions

7.4.1 Safety Officer/liable employee present shall have adequate knowledge about the operation of fire extinguishers.

7.4.2 Fire extinguishers shall be placed at a designated place and shall be easily approachable.

7.4.3 Monthly Inspection of extinguisher to be done as per format.
