SOP FOR THE OPERATION OF DCP TYPE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

1.1 To lay down the procedure for the operation of DCP-type fire extinguishers located on the premises of the company

2.1 This process shall be applicable for the Operation of DCP-type Extinguishers at company Premises

3.1 HR Officer and above shall be responsible for the preparation & execution of this SOP.

3.2 HR and QA shall be responsible for the review of this SOP.

3.3 HR Head and QA Head shall be responsible to ensure the compliance of the procedure and implementation of this SOP respectively.

5.0 DEFINITIONS

5.1 Definitions

5.1.1 Active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires. It is dry chemical powder extinguishers suitable for class A (combustible materials), class B (flammable or combustible liquids), and/or class C (electrical) fires or a combination of ABC class fires.

7.0 PROCEDURE

7.1 Application

7.1.1 DCP fire Extinguishers are suitable for tackling Petroleum fires, solvent fires, gas fires,

fires in electrical equipment and controlling surface fire.

7.1.2 Identification number should display on every fire extinguisher.

7.2 Method of Operation

7.2.1 Carry the extinguishers to the place of fire and keep them upright.

7.2.2 Remove the safety clip and strike the knob located in the cap which in turn breaks the sealing disc of the cartridge.

7.2.3 In case of 50 kg or above fire extinguisher, remove the safety pin and open the valve of the 2 kg CO2 cylinder

7.2.4 Direct discharge at the base of flame with a rapid sweeping motion.

7.2.5 For effective results, stand about 4 to 8 feet away and direct the stream near the fire.

7.2.6 When using on outdoor fires always operate the extinguishers from the upwind side of the fire to extend the effective range of the spray. Note the direction of the wind while operating it should be such that the powder of this extinguisher does not fall on the operator.

7.2.7 After use, an empty fire extinguisher shall be transferred to the pump house and labeled as “EMPTY”.

7.2.8 From the pump house empty fire extinguisher shall be transferred to an external agency for refilling.

7.3 Care & Maintenance

7.3.1 Internal verification of fire extinguishers shall be monthly (in the first week of the month) for the following.

7.3.2 Checking the physical condition of the fire extinguishers.

7.3.3 Checking the hosepipe, nozzle outlet & vents hole. Check the plunger.

7.3.4 Record the details as per the current version of Format-I

7.3.5 External verification of fire extinguisher shall be done after every three months for the following

7.3.6 Checking the physical condition of the fire extinguishers.

7.3.7 Checking the hosepipe, nozzle outlet & vent holes. Check the plunger.

7.3.8 Checking inside the powder for granulation & choking.

7.3.9 Weight of CO2 Cartridge.

7.3.10 Weight of CO2 2Kg extinguisher (in case of 50 Kg or above).

7.3.11 Refilling of used extinguishers shall be arranged by the SHE department.

7.4 Safety Precautions

7.4.1 Personnel shall have adequate knowledge about the operation of fire extinguishers.

7.4.2 Fire extinguishers shall be placed at the designated places and shall be easily approachable.
