The purpose of the standard is intended to provide personnel safety in the laboratory.
2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to all lab personnel in the laboratory.
3. RESPONSIBILITY
The technical manager is responsible for supervision. The quality Manager is responsible for implementing this procedure. Lab personnel is responsible to take all safety measures as per the documented procedure.
4.1 General safety rules in the laboratory
4.1.1 Wear lab coats and lab footwear while working in the laboratories.
4.1.2 Eating or drinking, and smoking in the lab are strictly prohibited.
4.1.3 Food is not permitted to be stored in any laboratory refrigerators.
4.1.4 Lab doors are to be kept closed.
4.1.5 Broken glassware must not be handled directly by hand
4.1.6 Chemicals should never test by taste and odor
4.1.7 All items, articles, solutions, and transfer material should be properly labeled.
4.1.8 Use a tray for handling solutions, glassware, or hazardous material.
4.1.9 Never use electric equipment near water.
4.1.10 Never use defective equipment and avoid overloading
4.1.11 Where a gas cylinder is used, use regulators & control equipment suitable for the gas concerned. Consider the consequences if your cylinder leaks
4.1.12 Appropriate eye protection, Lab goggles and or face shields, and gloves must be worn as needed.
4.1.13 Do not carry out a new or unfamiliar procedure without any senior supervision.
4.1.14 Make sure everything is safe before you leave things unattended.
4.1.15 Keep workplace neat and tidy
4.1.16 When mixing solutions, add the concentrate to the dilute liquid. Always add acid to water.
4.1.17 Volatile material should be handled in the fume hood.
4.1.18 List out chemical hazards and made them available for each laboratory personnel.
4.1.19 Material safety data sheets (MSDS) should be easily retrievable for all chemicals/substances
stored in the laboratory.
Precautions:
a) Memorize emergency numbers and the location of the fire extinguisher.
b) As much as possible identify persons in the lab present by head counting in routine.
c) Ensure that all installed fire extinguishers are operational by checking the pressure indicator (the needle should be on the green zone). Be sure that the fire extinguisher is recharged after each use.
d) Do not use a water or foam extinguisher on electrical equipment.
e) Avoid wooden cupboards, tables,s or benches in the chemical lab.
f) Stay calm.
g) The Technical Managers or the Scientists designated by them shall keep a record of all accidents within the laboratory.
