SOP FOR GENERAL SAFETY FROM CHEMICALS

1. PURPOSE

The purpose of the standard is intended to provide general safety from chemicals.

2. SCOPE

This procedure is applicable to all lab personnel in the laboratory.

3. RESPONSIBILITY




The technical manager is responsible for supervision. The quality Manager is responsible for implementing this procedure. Lab personnel is responsible to take all safety measures as per the documented procedure.

4. PROCEDURE

4.1 General safety rules for chemicals

4.1.1 Store acids and bases in separate locations, near floor level and in labeled cabinets.

4.1.2 Segregate highly toxic chemicals and carcinogens from all other chemicals.

4.1.3 Do not store peroxide-forming chemicals (e.g. ethyl ether, dioxane) for more than twelve months or beyond the date recommended by the manufacturer.

4.1.4 Refrigerate flammables in an explosion/spark-proof refrigerator.

4.1.5 Glass chemical containers should never be stored on the floor

4.1.6 Return chemicals, supplies, and associated equipment to their proper place after use.

4.1.7 When mixing solutions, add the concentrate to the dilute liquid. Always add acid to water.

4.1.8 Volatile material should be handled in a fume hood.

4.1.9 List out chemical hazards and made them available for each laboratory personnel.

4.1.10 Material safety data sheets (MSDS) should be easily retrievable for all chemicals/substances

4.1.11 Stored in the laboratory.

4.1.12 Chemicals should never test by taste and odor

4.1.13 All items, articles, solutions, and transfer material should be properly labeled.

4.1.14 Use a tray for handling solutions, glassware, or hazardous material.
