The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for color in oil and fat.
2.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of color in oil and fat.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
4.0 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Apparatus
4.1.1 Lovibond Tintometer or colorimeter
4.1.2 1’ and ¼ ‘ cells or as per requirement
4.1.3 Filter paper
4.2 Glassware: NA
4.3 Reagent: NA
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Melt the sample, if it is not already liquid and filter, it to remove impurities.
5.2 Clean the cell of the desired size with carbon tetra chloride and allow it to dry.
5.3 Fill the sample and place the cell in position in the tintometer.
5.4 Place alongside it such red, yellow blue, or neutral Lovibond glass slides or any combinations of these as are necessary to match the column shade of the oil.
5.5 Observing the color of the oil & of the combination of the glass slides through an eyepiece.
6.0 CALCULATION
Color =Y+5R
Where,
Y= the sum total of the various yellow color
R = the sum total of the various red color
