1.0 Purpose

  • Cheesecloth
  • Centrifuge
  • Funnel
  • Graduated cylinder

5.0 Procedure

  1. Remove the fish livers from the fish and discard any other tissue.
  2. Rinse the fish livers with cold water.
  3. Cut the fish livers into small pieces.
  4. Place the fish liver pieces in a blender and blend until smooth.
  5. Line a cheesecloth-lined funnel with a second layer of cheesecloth.
  6. Pour the blended fish liver mixture into the cheesecloth-lined funnel.
  7. Centrifuge the mixture at 10,000 rpm for 10 minutes.
  8. Collect the oil that has separated from the water in the centrifuge tube.
  9. Transfer the oil to a graduated cylinder.
  10. Label the graduated cylinder with the date and the type of Halibut liver oil (Fish Oil).
  11. Store the oil in a cool, dark place.

6.0 Acceptance Criteria

The Halibut liver Oil (Fish) should be clear and free of any impurities.

Records

The following records should be maintained:

  • A list of the fish livers that have been used to extract the oil
  • The results of the oil analysis
  • The storage conditions of the oil

Deviations

Any deviations from this SOP should be documented and investigated.
