Purpose:
The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to
establish guidelines and protocols for the care and maintenance of sentinel
animals used in research facilities. Sentinel animals play a critical role in
monitoring the health status of the overall animal colony and detecting
potential infectious diseases or contaminants.
Scope:
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the husbandry and care of sentinel animals within the research facility.
Responsibilities:
a. Ensure compliance with this SOP.
b. Provide necessary resources for the implementation of
sentinel husbandry protocols.
c. Oversee the training of personnel involved in sentinel
husbandry.
a. Perform routine husbandry tasks according to this SOP.
b. Monitor the health and well-being of sentinel animals.
c. Follow proper animal handling and restraint techniques.
Procedures:
a. Provide sentinel animals with appropriate housing
facilities, including cages or enclosures that meet the species-specific
requirements.
b. Maintain ambient conditions within the recommended range
of temperature, humidity, and lighting for the species.
c. Ensure proper ventilation and air quality in sentinel animal housing areas.
Sentinel Animal Selection:
a. Select sentinel animals from the same species and strain
as the research animals.
b. Choose sentinel animals that are free from any known
infections or diseases.
c. Periodically screen sentinel animals for common pathogens to ensure their health status.
Quarantine and Acclimation:
a. Quarantine newly arrived sentinel animals in a separate
designated area.
b. Monitor and assess the health status of the newly arrived
animals during the quarantine period.
c. Conduct necessary tests to confirm the absence of
infectious agents.
d. Acclimate sentinel animals to the housing environment gradually to minimize stress.
Sentinel Animal Health Monitoring:
a. Perform regular health checks on sentinel animals,
including visual inspection, body weight measurements, and assessment of
behavioral patterns.
b. Monitor sentinel animals for signs of illness, distress,
or abnormal behavior.
c. Report any abnormal findings or suspected infectious diseases to the veterinary staff or animal facility manager immediately.
Sample Collection and Testing:
a. Collect appropriate samples from sentinel animals for
laboratory testing, such as blood, feces, urine, or swabs, as required.
b. Follow proper sample collection techniques to ensure
sample integrity.
c. Send collected samples to the designated laboratory for
analysis as per established protocols.
d. Maintain accurate records of sample collection, testing, and results.
Sanitation and Biosecurity:
a. Follow proper sanitation procedures for sentinel animal
housing areas, including regular cleaning and disinfection of cages,
enclosures, and equipment.
b. Adhere to biosecurity measures to prevent the
introduction or spread of infectious agents among sentinel animals and the
overall animal colony.
c. Implement strict personal hygiene practices, including hand washing, wearing appropriate protective clothing, and using disinfectants.
Record Keeping:
a. Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of sentinel
animal husbandry activities, health monitoring, sample collection, and test
results.
b. Keep records of any treatments, medication
administration, or veterinary interventions related to sentinel animals.
c. Retain records for the required period as per institutional or regulatory guidelines.
Training and Education:
a. Provide appropriate training to personnel involved in
sentinel husbandry, including proper animal handling techniques, disease
recognition, and SOP adherence.
b. Keep personnel updated on new developments or changes in sentinel husbandry protocols and regulations.
Emergency Procedures:
a. Develop and implement emergency procedures for sentinel
animals, including evacuation plans and contingencies for natural disasters, power
failures, or calamities.
