STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR RODENT BREEDING

1.0 Objective

The objective of this SOP is to outline the routine and guidelines for rodent breeding in order to ensure the health and well-being of the rodents involved.

2.0 Scope

This SOP applies to all rodents that are being bred at the facility.

3.0 Definitions

·         Animal disposal: The process of removing dead rodents from the facility.

·         Breeding stock: The rodents that are being used for breeding.

·         Dry bedding: Bedding that does not absorb moisture.

·         Interchange: The process of switching male and female breeding stock.

·         Protein supplements: Food additives that contain protein.

·         Multivitamins: Food additives that contain vitamins.

·         Pup transfer data: Records of the pups that have been transferred to new owners.

·         Sex identification: The process of determining the sex of a pup.

4.0 Routine

The following routine should be followed for rodent breeding:

·         Daily:

o    Check for dead rodents.

o    Clean cages and water bottles.

o    Ensure that there is enough feed, water, and dry bedding.

·         Fortnightly:

o    Interchange male and female breeding stock.

o    Wash aprons and sleepers.

o    Identify male and female pups.

·         Monthly:

o    Isolate pregnant females from the animals kept for breeding.

o   Female rats should be isolated for one month after giving birth to allow them to recover and rest. The pups should be separated from the mother for washing and to prevent them from becoming attached to her. The female rats can then be bred again after the isolation period.

·         Other:

o    Separate pups from their mother after 19 days of the weaning period.

o    Maintain breeding room records.

o    Keep daily and weekend records.

o    Provide protein supplements and multivitamins on alternate days and weekends respectively.

o    Manage pup transfer data.

5.0 Guidelines

The following guidelines should be followed for rodent breeding:

·         Keep one male with two females for breeding.

·         Females should give birth after 19-22 days.
