SOP for Daily Rabbit Care
1.0 Responsibilities:
- Animal
Care Staff
2.0 Materials:
- Rabbit
diet (fresh)
- Clean
water bottles
- Clean
cages
- Paper
pan liners
- Bedding
- Clean
litter boxes
- Enrichment
devices
- Disinfectant solution
3.0 Daily Tasks:
- Observe
rabbits: Check for any health issues and report them to the vet.
- Record
environment: Log temperature, humidity, light, and noise levels.
Report any abnormalities to the supervisor.
- Feed
rabbits: Provide fresh food ad libitum.
- Water: Check
automatic waterers and refill bottles with fresh water.
- Clean:
- Remove
wet bedding and empty litter boxes 3 times a week. Refill with fresh
bedding.
- Change
cage pan liners 3 times a week minimum.
- Sweep
floors and empty trash.
- Restock
supplies.
- Weekly:
- Deep
clean pens: Remove bedding, disinfect pens, change food/water containers,
litter boxes, and enrichment devices.
- Change
cage banks (minimum every 2 weeks). Move one rabbit at a time to avoid
mix-ups.
- Mop
floors with disinfectant.
- Flush the water system and check the light timers.
- Clean
floor drains.
- Monthly:
- Change the water system filter.
- Wipe
down all surfaces with disinfectant.
- Clean
exhaust grills.
- Bi-annually:
- Wash
all walls with disinfectant.
4.0 Special Procedures:
- Sick/injured
animals:
- Mark the cage with a card and report to the vet staff.
- Fill
out an Illness/Injury Report.
- Disinfectant
solution:
- Wear
PPE when preparing and using.
- Dilute
as per the manufacturer's instructions.
- Clean
surfaces before disinfecting.
- Apply
disinfectant and allow proper contact time.
