1.0 OBJECTIVE
1.1 To lay down a standard procedure to be followed for the receipt, storage, analysis and distribution of animal feed & bedding material and analysis of water in Animal House Facility.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This SOP shall be applicable to the procedure followed for the receipt, storage, analysis, and distribution of animal feed & bedding material and analysis of water in Animal House Facility.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Receipt, storage, and distribution of animal feed
5.1.1 Feed shall be purchased
from the registered commercial source with an analysis certificate.
5.1.2 Rodent pellet feed shall
be provided for Rats and Mice. Similarly, Standard pellet feed shall be
provided for Rabbits and Guinea pigs.
5.1.3 New batch of feed shall
arrive when there is sufficient stock for at least one to two weeks.
5.1.4 Depending upon the space
availability of the feed shall be stocked in the storeroom.
5.1.5 The bags shall be
identified by the batch number (if applicable) / manufacture date.
5.1.6 Old batch of the feed
shall be taken first for distribution and use.
5.1.7 Before the arrival of new the batch of the feed, the feed storage room shall be broomed and then mopping with
disinfectant solution (2.5% or as per manufacturer's instruction) shall be done.
5.1.8 The bags shall be taken
to the storeroom. Feed bags shall be wiped from outside with the cloth soaked
in disinfectant solution (2.5% or as per manufacturer's instruction), before
passing for storage in the storeroom.
5.1.9 Feed shall be sterilized by UV and stored in Stainless steel sterilized containers in UV room for further offering to animals.
5.2 Receipt, storage, and distribution of the bedding material
5.2.1 The corn cobs/paddy husk
shall be procured from the commercial vendor when there is sufficient stock for
at least two to three weeks.
5.2.2 The bedding material
after receipt shall be stored in the store area / designated area.
5.2.3 Then corn cob/paddy husk
shall be sterilized in UV room before distribution in animal cages.
5.2.4 Corn cob/paddy husk shall be sterilized by UV and stored in UV room for further offering to animals.
5.3 Analysis of Feed, Water, and bedding material
5.3.1 Feed, water, and bedding material shall be tested in-house for microbiological analysis. Feed material shall be analyzed within a month after receiving and monthly thereafter, water shall be analyzed once a month and bedding material shall be analyzed once in every 3 months or as and when necessary.
5.4 Feed Analysis
5.4.1 At least approximate 100 g of the standard pellet feed and approximate 100 gram of rodent pellet feed
shall be collected and packed with the details such as type of feed, Batch
Number (If applicable), quantity, and date of collection and shall be sent to
microbiology department for analysis and report shall be received for
microbiological analysis.
5.4.2 The received analysis of the report shall be verified by the head of the department/section in-charge.
Results of the report for the undesirable substances shall be compared with the
limit values for undesirable substances.
5.4.3 Feed testing shall be
done once a month after receiving a new batch of feed and every month
thereafter. Interim testing may be done if any contamination is suspected.
5.4.4 If any batch found to be crossed the limit values for undesirable substances, then it shall be discarded or returned to the supplier.
5.5 Water Analysis
5.5.1 Water from the water
purifier (approximate half liter for physicochemical properties and approximate
half liter for microbiology) shall be collected in sterile containers and shall
be sealed properly. The container shall bear the details about the source, date of
collection and volume and subjected to analysis.
5.5.2 Batch/Lot no. of water the sample shall be given as RW Month date (where RW infers RO Water).
5.5.3 Sample shall be sent for
physicochemical and microbiological analysis to respective departments or to
the third party analysis report shall be received for Physico-chemical analysis
and for microbiological analysis.
5.5.4 The received analysis of the report shall be verified by the head of the department/section in-charge. If any contamination or level of contaminants found to be above acceptable limit, it shall be informed to the concerned persons appointed by the management for taking the appropriate action pertaining to the encountered problem.
5.6 Bedding Material Analysis
5.6.1 At least approximate 100
g of the bedding material shall be collected and packed with the details
such as type of bedding material, Batch Number (If applicable), quantity and
date of collection and shall be sent to the microbiology department for analysis
and report shall be received for microbiological analysis.
5.6.2 The received analysis of the report shall be verified by the head of the department/section in-charge.
Results of the report for the undesirable substances shall be compared with the
limit values for undesirable substances.
5.6.3 Bedding material testing
shall be analyzed once every 3 months or as and when necessary. Interim
testing may be done if any contamination is suspected.
5.6.4 If any batch found to be
crossed the limit values for undesirable substances, then it shall be discarded
or returned to the supplier.
