STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR FUMIGATION IN MICROBIOLOGY LAB

1.0 OBJECTIVE

To lay down the procedure for fumigation in the microbiology lab.

2.0 SCOPE

This SOP shall be applicable for fumigation in Microbiology Lab.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 Microbiologists and above shall be responsible for the preparation and execution of this SOP

3.2 QC & QA Head shall be responsible for the checking and approval of this SOP.

3.3 HOD shall be responsible for the authorization of this SOP.

4.0 ACCOUNTABILITY

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Ensure that area is free from any item or sterile solution.

5.2 Ensure that LAF switches in at the "OFF" position.

5.3 Ensure that AHU and A.C. systems are in the "OFF" position.

5.4 Plastic or glass container shall be placed in the room to be disinfected and put 10 -15g potassium permanganate (commercial grade).

5.5 With utmost care 25-30 ml formaldehyde solution (37 %) shall be added to the container and leave the room.

5.6 Similarly take 5 g of potassium permanganate and 10-15 ml of formaldehyde solution for the airlock.

5.7 Ensure that the entry points are sealed and the containers shall be left overnight in the area.

5.8 Next day ensure that the AHU system is switched "ON" and shall be given exposure time of at least 4 hours before entering.

5.9 Area shall be neutralized by sprinkling 10%(v/v) ammonia solution.

5.10 After that the area shall be clean as per SOP No……………………

5.11 Frequency: Once a week & whenever necessary.

5.12 Precautions

5.12.1 The container used for the purpose shall be sufficient in size so that the material is not expelled out of it.

5.12.2 Safety goggles/ mask shall be wear while handling fumigants and during operation.

5.12.3 Ensure that the doors of the sterility room, entry door and are sealed during the procedure.

5.12.4 Entry in that region shall be restricted, as the fumes have an irritating effect on the eyes and nose.
