SOP FOR CLEANING AND WASHING OF ANIMAL CAGES, WATER BOTTLES AND RACKS


1.0 PURPOSE

To design a Standard Operating Procedure that describes the procedure of cleaning and washing of animal cages, water bottles and racks in the animal house facility.

2.0 SCOPE

This SOP shall be applicable to the department of animal house facility, pharmacology and toxicology department.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 All personnel in the Pharmacology Department shall be responsible for implementation and compliance to the SOP.

3.2 Head/Designees/Study Directors of Pharmacology department shall be responsible to ensure the implementation and compliance to the SOP.

 



4.0 DISTRIBUTION

4.1 The Quality Assurance department shall be responsible to keep SOP ‘Master Copy’ approved through Quality Manager.

4.2 The copy of ‘Control Copy’ of SOP is being distributed in AHF user departments and placed respective area as Display Copy.

6.0 PROCEDURE

6.1 Cleaning And Washing Of Animal Cages And Racks

6.1.1 Cleaning and washing of animal cages and racks shall be strictly done in the washing area.

6.1.2 PPEs shall be worn while cleaning and washing of the cages and racks.

6.1.3 Tank 1 and tank 2 shall be filled with clean normal and hot water respectively.

6.1.4 Bedding material from the used cages shall be removed and kept in the disposable bags.

6.1.5 First, all the empty cages shall be washed with normal water in the Tank 1.

6.1.6 Then all the cages shall be cleaned with detergent and washed with warm water in the tank 2.

6.1.7 Finally all the cages shall be washed thoroughly with lukewarm water in the Tank 3.

6.1.8 All the cages shall be kept in the separate area for the water drainage.

6.1.9 Similarly, first all the racks shall be cleaned with cloths and brushes to remove dust.

6.1.10 Then racks shall be washed with normal water followed by cleaning with detergent and final wash with warm water.

6.1.11 Sodium hypochlorite can be added in the water for the washing of cage and racks.

6.1.12 Racks in use shall be washed once in each quarter of a year. All racks shall be wiped once in a week. Cart and racks shall be cleaned daily or as often as necessary.

6.1.13 A detergent-disinfectant shall be used to sanitize racks and carts.

6.1.14 Dirty cages and materials shall be organized to facilitate cleaning and safe operation of equipment.

6.1.15 The bedding disposal cabinet and other equipments should be cleaned with disinfectant.

6.2 Water Bottles Cleaning

6.2.1 Water bottles offering aqua guard clean water, sipper nozzles stopper and other equipments shall be cleaned regularly thrice a week with hot water (temperature approx. 82.2°C)

6.2.2 Disinfectant like Sodium hypochlorite shall be used in the water to destroy pathogenic organism.

6.2.3 All animal cages and water bottles filled with water) shall be sterilized by autoclave at 121°C temperature, 15 psi pressure for 15 minutes.

6.2.4 Assessment of cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene in animal house shall be done by visual monitoring, microbiologic monitoring (swab analysis).

7.0 PRECAUTIONS

7.1 Washing activity shall be done in the washing area only.

7.2 Disinfectant like sodium hypochlorite shall be used whenever required.
