1.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of acid value in oil and fat.
2.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Apparatus
3.1.1 Analytical Balance
3.2 Glassware
3.2.1 Conical flask-250 ml
3.2.2 Burette-50 ml
3.2.3 Measuring cylinder-100 ml
3.3 Reagent
3.3.1 Ethyl Alcohol: 95% or rectified spirit (neutral to Phenolphthalein indicator)
3.3.2 Phenolphthalein Indicator solution: Dissolve 1 g in 100 ml Ethyl alcohol.
3.3.3 Standard Aqueous Potassium or Sodium hydroxide: 0.1 N or 0.5 N.
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Mix the sample thoroughly before weighing.
4.2 Weigh 10gm of the sample into 250ml conical flask.
4.3 Add 50-100ml of freshly neutralized hot Ethyl Alcohol and 1ml of Phenolphthalein indicator.
4.4 Boil this mixture for about 5 min and titrate while hot with a standard aqueous alkali solution (vigorous shaking should be done while titration) until the pink color persists for 15 seconds.
5.0 CALCULATION
Acid Value = 56.1×V×N
W
Where,
V = Vol. of Std. NaOH solution used (in ml)
N = Normality of Std. 0.1N NaOH solution,
W = Weight of the sample taken for the test (in g)
