1.0 SCOPE
This standard testing procedure is suitable for the Standardisation of Sodium thiosulphate solution.
2.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.
3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Apparatus: NA
3.2 Glassware
3.2.1 Conical Flask (250 ml)
3.2.2 Burette-50 ml
3.2.3 Pipette-10 ml, 25 ml
3.2.4 Measuring cylinder-100 ml
3.3 Reagent
3.3.1 Sodium thiosulphate solution to be standardized
3.3.2 Previously dried Potassium dichromate
3.3.3 Potassium iodide(freshly prepared)
3.3.4 Concentrated Hydrochloric acid
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 standard potassium dichromate solution and preparation of 0.1N solution
4.2 Carefully pulverize about 6gms of K2Cr2O7 dry at 120+-50C to constant weight and cool.
4.3 Dissolve 4.9031gms of dried material in water and dilute to 1000ml.
4.4 Transfer 25ml 0.1N a K2Cr2O7 solution to a 250ml flask.
4.5 Add 2gms of KI(freshly prepared) and 8ml of concentrated HCl, mix thoroughly.
4.6 Titrate with sodium thiosulphate, swirling liquid constantly till it is.
4.7 Brown color changes to yellowish green.
4.8 Add 2 ml of starch solution and continue the titration until the color changes sharply from blue to light green.
4.9 Note down the titration value.
5.0 CALCULATION
N1V1=N2V2, N2 = 0.1 #25 ml(K2Cr2O7 solu.)
Burette reading(in ml)
Where N1= Normality of K2Cr2O7
N2= Normality of Na2S2O3
V1= Volume of K2Cr2O7
V2= Volume of Na2S2O3
