STP FOR METHOD OF DETERMINATION OF SAPONIFIED MATTER IN OIL AND FAT

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for saponification value in oil and fat.

2.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for the determination of saponification value in oil & fat.

3.0 SCOPE

This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of saponification value in oil & fat.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY

The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.

5.0 REQUIREMENTS

5.1 Apparatus

5.1.1 Reflux condenser

5.1.2 Water bath or Hot plate.

5.1.3 Analytical Balance

5.2 Glassware

5.2.1 Measuring Cylinder-10 ml & 25 ml

5.2.2 RB Flask -250 ml

5.2.3 Conical flasks -250 ml

5.2.4 Pipette-25 ml

5.2.5 Burette- 50 ml

5.3 Reagent

5.3.1 Alcoholic KOH solution: Dissolve 35 – 40 g of KOH in 20 ml distilled water and add 95%ethanol to make up to 1000ml. allow to stand overnight, filter the clear liquid

5.3.2 95%Ethanol

5.3.3 Phenolphthalein indicator – 1 gm. in 100 ml ethanol (95%)

5.3.4 Standard HCl: approximately 0.5 N

6.0 PROCEDURE

6.1 Melt & filter the sample.

6.2 Weigh 1.5- 2.5 g in a round bottom flask

6.3 Add 25 ml alcoholic KOH solution and connect the reflux condenser to the flask.

6.4 Heat flask on water bath/hot plate for not more than 1 hr.

6.5 Boil gently but steadily until the sample is completely saponified as indicated by the absence of any oily matter and the appearance of a clear solution.

6.6 Cool and wash the condenser with about 10 ml hot ethyl alcohol neutral to phenolphthalein indicator.

6.7 Add about 1 ml Phenolphthalein indicator solution and titrate with standard 0.5 N HCl.

6.7 Prepare a blank also.

7.0 CALCULATION

                                         (B.T.V – S.T.V) X 56.1 X Normality of Std. HCl

   Saponification value =

                                                  Weight of sample

               Where,

B.T.V = Volume of standard. HCl required for the blank (in ml)

S.T.V = Volume of standard. HCl required for the sample (in ml)

N       = Normality of standard (0.5N) HCl

W      =Weight of the sample taken for the test.
