STP FOR PEROXIDE VALUE DETERMINATION IN HAIR OIL

 1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for Peroxide value in Hair Oil

2.0 SCOPE

This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of Peroxide value in Hair Oil.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Apparatus NA

4.2 Glassware

4.2.1 ConicalFlask (250 ml)

4.2.2 Burette-50 ml

4.2.3 Pipette-10 ml,25 ml

4.2.4 Measuring cylinder-100 ml

4.3 Reagent

4.3.1 Glacial Acetic Acid

4.3.2 Chloroform

4.3.3 Potassium Iodide Solution, Saturated, freshly prepared

4.3.4 Standard Sodium thiosulphate solution, 0.01N, freshly Standardized

4.3.5 Starch Indicator Solution

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1Weiht accurately 5gms of material in a 250ml stoppered Conical flask.

5.2 Dissolved it by shaking it in a 30ml of the mixed solvent containing 3 parts by volume of glacial acetic acid and 2 parts by volume of chloroform.

5.3 Add 0.5ml of saturated potassium iodide solution allowing the solution to stand exactly for 1 minute with occasional shaking.

5.4 Add 30 ml of water and titrate with standard sodium thiosulphate solution.

5.5 Add the thiosulphate solution until the color of the titrated solution becomes light yellow.

5.6 Add 1ml of starch indicator solution and continue the titration till the disappearance of blue color.

5.7 Carry out a blank determination without the sample.

5.8 Note down all the titration values.

     6.0     CALCULATION

                                              Peroxide Value milliequivalents 1000gms =    1000(l1/M-l2)N

                         Where,

l1 = Vol. of Std. sodium thiosulphate solution required with the sample (in ml)

l2 = Vol. of Std.  sodium thiosulphate solution required with the blank (in ml)

N  = Normality of standard sodium thiosulphate solution

M   =Weight of the sample taken for the test (in gms).
