STP FOR THE METHOD OF DETERMINATION OF IODENE VALUE IN OIL AND FATS

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the document is to establish a general and uniform method for iodine value in oil and fat.

2.0 SCOPE

This standard testing procedure is suitable for the determination of iodine value in oil and fat.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

The expert and trained chemist are responsible for following this procedure. The technical manager is responsible for implementing this procedure.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Apparatus NA

4.2 Glassware

4.2.1 Glass-stopped Iodine Flask (250 ml)

4.2.2 Burette-50 ml

4.2.3 Pipette-10 ml,25 ml

4.2.4 Measuring cylinder-100 ml

4.3 Reagent

4.3.1 Potassium iodide (10%)

4.3.2 Standard sodium thiosulphate solution (0.1N)

4.3.3 Starch solution

4.3.4 Wijs Iodine monochloride solution

4.3.5 Carbon tetra chloride or Chloroform

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Melt the sample if not already completely liquid.

5.2 The sample should remove impurities.

5.3Weigh accurately according to list or table no-3 which is given in IS 548.

5.4 Add 25 ml carbon tetra chloride or chloroform to dissolve the content.

5.5 Add 25 ml of the solution to place the glass stopper.

5.6 In some processes make blank.

5.7 Allow standing in dark for 30 min. also at the walls above the stopper add some water to prevent the liberation of iodine.

5.8 After standing in the dark add 15 ml of Potassium iodide solution and 100 ml water.

5.9 Rinsing the stopper.

5.10 Titrate the liberated iodine with standard (0.1N)sodium thiosulphate solution,

5.11 Swirling the contents of the bottle continuously to avoid any local excess until the color of the solution is straw yellow.

5.12 Add 1 ml of starch solution and continue the titration

5.13 Blue colors appear which turns to colorless.

5.14 Note down the titration value.

6.0       CALCULATION

 Iodine value = {(B.T.V – S.T.V) X 12.69 X Normality of Std. Na2S2O3}/Weight of sample

        Where,

B.T.V = Vol. of Std. Na2S2O3 is required for the blank (in ml)

S.T.V = Vol. of Std. Na2S2O3 is required for the sample (in ml)

N       = Normality of standard (0.1) N Na2S2O3

W      = Weight of the sample taken for the test.
