Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Disposal of Dead Animals
Scope:
This SOP outlines the procedures for the safe and proper disposal of dead animals, including those that have been used for research purposes, in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Responsibility:
The following personnel is responsible for the implementation of this SOP:
Animal Facility Manager: responsible for ensuring that the disposal of dead animals is conducted in accordance with the procedures outlined in this SOP.
Animal Care Staff: responsible for the proper handling and storage of dead animals prior to disposal.
Waste Management Personnel: responsible for the collection, transportation, and disposal of dead animals.
Procedure:
Notification: The animal care staff must notify the animal facility manager immediately upon discovering a dead animal.
Segregation: Dead animals must be placed in a designated area within the animal facility that is inaccessible to unauthorized personnel.
Documentation: The animal facility manager must document the following information for each dead animal:
Species
Strain/stock number
Date of death
Cause of death (if known)
Disposal method
Disinfection: The animal care staff must disinfect the area where the dead animal was located using an appropriate disinfectant.
Transport: The waste management personnel must transport the dead animal to the designated disposal area.
Disposal:
a. Incineration: Dead animals must be incinerated at a licensed facility that meets local, state, and federal regulations.
b. Burial: Dead animals may be buried in a designated area that meets local, state, and federal regulations.
c. Rendering: Dead animals may be sent to a rendering facility that meets local, state, and federal regulations.
Precautions:
Personnel must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling dead animals or their carcasses, including gloves, gowns, and face shields.
Dead animals must be handled and transported in leak-proof and puncture-resistant containers.
All equipment and surfaces that come into contact with dead animals must be disinfected using an appropriate disinfectant.
Dead animals must not be stored in the animal facility for more than 48 hours.
