Standard Operating Procedure (SOP): Humane Intervention
Points for Rodent Cancer Models
1.0 Purpose:
The purpose of this SOP is to establish guidelines for humane intervention points during the experimental use of rodent cancer models. These guidelines aim to ensure the well-being and minimize the suffering of animals involved in cancer research.
2.0 Scope:
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the handling, care, and experimentation of rodents in cancer models.
3.0 Responsibilities:
3.1. Principal Investigator (PI):
Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and regulations
related to animal welfare.
Oversee the implementation of humane intervention points.
Provide appropriate training to personnel involved in the
study.
3.2. Animal Care Staff:
Monitor the health and well-being of animals on a regular
basis.
Report any signs of distress, discomfort, or disease to the
PI.
4.0 Humane Intervention Points:
4.1. Tumor Size:
Regularly measure and monitor tumor size in accordance with
the experimental protocol.
Establish a predetermined threshold for tumor volume or
diameter that triggers humane intervention.
4.2. Body Condition:
Establish a predetermined threshold for body weight loss or
body condition score that triggers humane intervention.
4.3. Clinical Signs:
Establish a predetermined threshold for specific clinical
signs that trigger humane intervention.
4.4. Pain and Distress:
Implement a pain scoring system to monitor and identify
animals requiring intervention.
5.0 Humane Intervention Procedures:
5.1. Consultation:
When any of the predetermined humane intervention thresholds
are met, consult with the PI or a designated veterinarian for further
evaluation.
5.2. Veterinary Assessment:
If necessary, involve a veterinarian to conduct a thorough
examination of the animal and provide expert advice on appropriate
interventions.
5.3. Humanitarian Endpoint:
Establish a predefined humane endpoint to guide decisions
regarding euthanasia or early termination of the experiment to prevent
excessive suffering.
5.4. Documentation:
Maintain accurate and detailed records of all humane
interventions performed, including the rationale, procedures, and outcomes.
6.0 Training:
All personnel involved in the study must receive appropriate
training on the recognition of distress signs, assessment techniques, and the
implementation of humane intervention points.
7.0 Reporting:
8.0 References:
Refer to relevant guidelines and regulations, such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) protocols, local animal welfare regulations, and applicable laws.
9.0 Revision History:
Maintain a revision history for this SOP, documenting any
updates or modifications made over time.
Note: This SOP is intended as a general guideline and should be adapted to comply with specific institutional policies, ethical considerations, and regulatory requirements governing the use of animals in research.
