Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Individually
Ventilated Cages
1.0 Objective:
To ensure the proper care, maintenance, and utilization of
individually ventilated cages (IVCs) for the housing of laboratory animals in
compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.
2.0 Scope:
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the handling,
maintenance, and monitoring of individually ventilated cages within the designated animal house facility.
3.0 Responsibility:
The Principal Investigator (PI) or designated supervisor is
responsible for overseeing the implementation of this SOP. Animal care staff
and researchers working with laboratory animals must adhere to these guidelines.
4.0 Procedure:
4.1 Preparation and Inspection:
a. Inspect the IVCs before use to ensure they are clean, in
good condition, and equipped with proper bedding.
b. Ensure that the IVCs meet regulatory and institutional
guidelines for animal welfare.
4.2 Animal Housing:
a. Place animals in IVCs according to the approved protocol.
b. Avoid overcrowding and ensure that the number of animals
per cage complies with ethical guidelines.
4.3 Bedding and Environmental Enrichment:
a. Provide appropriate bedding materials for the comfort and
well-being of the animals.
b. Include environmental enrichment items, such as tunnels,
nesting materials, or chew toys, to enhance the animals' living conditions.
4.4 Health Monitoring:
a. Regularly monitor animals for signs of distress, illness,
or abnormal behavior.
b. Implement a health surveillance program to detect and manage any potential health issues promptly.
4.5 Cage Changing and Cleaning:
a. Schedule regular cage changing based on the approved
protocol.
b. Follow aseptic techniques during cage changing to
minimize the risk of contamination.
c. Thoroughly clean cages using approved disinfectants.
4.6 Ventilation System Maintenance:
a. Regularly inspect and maintain the IVC ventilation system
to ensure proper airflow and filtration.
b. Follow manufacturer guidelines for routine maintenance
and address any malfunctions promptly.
4.7 Record Keeping:
a. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of animal
housing, health status, and any interventions performed.
b. Record any deviations from the protocol and report them
to the appropriate personnel.
4.8 Training:
a. Ensure that all personnel working with IVCs are
adequately trained on the proper procedures and handling techniques.
b. Conduct regular training sessions and updates as needed.
4.9 Emergency Procedures:
a. Develop and communicate emergency procedures for power
outages, equipment failures, or other unforeseen events.
b. Establish contingency plans for relocating animals if
necessary.
4.10 Disposal of Waste:
a. Follow institutional guidelines for the disposal of
animal waste and bedding materials.
b. Ensure that waste disposal methods comply with
environmental regulations.
