STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE (SOP) FOR MAN AND MATERIALS MOVEMENT IN LABORATORY ANIMAL FACILITY

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Man and Materials Movement in Laboratory Animal Facility

1.0 Objective:

To establish guidelines for the movement of personnel, materials, and animals within the Laboratory Animal Facility (LAF) to prevent contamination and maintain a clean and controlled environment.

2.0 Scope:

This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the handling, maintenance, and experimentation of laboratory animals within the designated LAF.



2.1 Man Movement:

2.1.1 During water & feed distribution:

a. Personnel involved: Lab Attendant, Lab Assistant, Experimental Scientist, Supervisor

b. Ensure hands are thoroughly washed and sanitized before handling water and feed.

2.1.2 While cage changing, cleaning & washing:

a. Personnel involved: Lab Attendant, Lab Assistant, Experimental Scientist, Supervisor

b. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during these activities.

c. Follow aseptic techniques to minimize contamination.

2.1.3 In disease condition:

a. Personnel involved: Lab Attendant, Lab Assistant, Experimental Scientist, Supervisor

b. Extra precautions should be taken, including wearing additional PPE as required.

c. Minimize movement in and out of the area.

2.1.4 Observation of dead animals:

a. Personnel involved: Lab Attendant, Lab Assistant, Experimental Scientist, Supervisor

b. Use disposable gloves and follow the established necropsy procedures.

2.1.5 During experimentation:

a. Personnel involved: Experimental Scientist, Lab Assistant, Supervisor

b. Strict adherence to aseptic techniques and experiment-specific protocols.

2.1.6 Autoclaving procedure:

a. Personnel involved: Lab Attendant, Lab Assistant

b. Follow established protocols for autoclaving contaminated materials.

c. Wear appropriate PPE during the autoclaving process.

3. Material Movement:

3.1 Water distribution:

a. Use clean, autoclaved containers for water distribution.

3.2 Feed distribution:

a. Ensure feed is stored in a designated, clean area.

3.3 Experimental items (Instruments, Chemicals, Buffers, Records):

a. Items must be sanitized before entering the LAF.

b. Use designated pathways for material movement.

3.4 Cages & water bottles:

a. Clean and autoclave cages before use.

b. Water bottles should be sanitized before placement.

3.5 PPE (Lab coat, Hand gloves, Face mask, Headcover, Slippers & Shoe covers):

a. Use PPE as per the activity being performed.

3.6 Cleaning equipment (broom, wipers, water tub):

a. Clean and sanitize equipment after each use.

3.7 Fogging Equipment:

a. Use in designated areas only.

3.8 Disinfectants:

a. Apply disinfectants as per the established schedule and protocols.

3.9 Entry Records (Personnel Logbook):

a. Maintain accurate records of personnel entry and exit.

3.10 Bio-waste disposal materials:

a. Dispose of bio-waste following institutional guidelines.

3.11 SS Supportive furniture (Trolley & Racks):

a. Use designated pathways for movement.

3.12 Urine, Feces, Feed & Water Sample Collection for Testing:

a. Follow aseptic techniques during sample collection.

4. Men and Movement from the Dirty (Service) Corridor & Clean Corridor:

4.1 Personnel involved:

a. Lab Attendant

b. Lab Assistant

c. Experimental Scientist

d. Supervisor

e. Visitors

f. Maintenance officers & personnel

4.2 Animal Movement:

4.3 Animals LAF Entry:

a. Follow quarantine procedures for new arrivals.

4.4 Quarantine:

a. Isolate new animals for the designated period.

4.5 Storage Transfer:

a. Follow aseptic techniques during transfers.

4.6 Isolation Room Transfer:

a. Adhere to isolation protocols and wear appropriate PPE.

4.7 Experimentation Transfer:

a. Follow experiment-specific protocols and maintain cleanliness.

4.8 Necropsy Transfer:

a. Follow established necropsy procedures and wear appropriate PPE.

4.9 Biopsy Transfer:

a. Use aseptic techniques during biopsy transfers.
