1.0 PURPOSE
To design a Standard Operating Procedure that describes the use and maintenance of a bedding disposal system used to reduce exposures of cage wash personnel to airborne allergens and environmental contaminates.
2.0 SCOPE
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is applicable for the operation, and maintenance of the bedding disposal system for cage wash and animal care personnel at the animal house facility
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 It is the responsibility of each facility’s maintenance support and cage wash personnel to ensure that this equipment is appropriately monitored, cleaned, and maintained in good working order.
3.2 It is the responsibility of each facility’s maintenance support and cage wash personnel to ensure that all cage wash personnel are adequately trained and experienced in the use of this equipment.
3.3 It is the responsibility of each facility’s maintenance support and cage wash personnel to read and understand the instruction manual prior to equipment use.
3.4 Facility Managers are responsible for all aspects of this SOP when Maintenance Support and Cage Wash Personnel are unavailable.
4.0 DISTRIBUTION
4.1 The Quality Assurance department is responsible for keeping SOP ‘Master Copy’ approved through the Quality Manager.
5.0 DEFINITION(S)
5.1 Definition(s)
5.1.1 Bedding disposal stations create an air barrier that makes it difficult for aerosol particles, small powder dust, and odors to escape into the working environment thus reducing exposure of staff to airborne allergens and environmental contaminates.
6.0 ABBREVIATION(S)
6.1.1 SOP: Standard Operating Procedure
6.1.4 PPEs: Personal Protective Equipment
7.0 PROCEDURE
7.1 Turn on the station’s blower and allow the blower to operate for a minimum of 15 minutes before starting work.
7.2 To reduce airflow disruptions:
7.2.1 Movements in and out of the work area shall be minimal.
7.2.2 Activity in the room, including opening and closing doors shall be minimal.
7.2.3 Bringing non-essential equipment/supp shall be avoided.
7.2.4 Exhaust vents shall not be obstructed.
7.3 To empty waste bag:
7.3.1 Unit shall leave ON.
7.3.2 Funnel shall be moved to the rear of the work area.
7.3.3 The waste bag shall be closed properly.
7.3.4 The waste cupboard shall open and pull out the waste bag trolley.
7.3.5 The waste bag shall be replaced.
7.4 Following completion of all work, the blower shall be operated for at least 15 minutes without activity to purge air from inside the operating area before switching the unit OFF.
7.5 The unit shall be turned OFF
7.6 The interior surfaces shall be cleaned at the end of the day.
7.7 Maintenance
7.8 Inspect the condition of the unit and electrical cord/plug to ensure safe operation. Equipment determined to be unsafe shall be removed from service immediately.
7.9 The stations have both epoxy-coated steel and stainless steel surfaces. Chlorinated or halogen-based cleaners shall not be used to clean stainless steel surfaces.
7.10 The cleaning/decontamination of the interior surfaces shall be performed daily with the unit turned OFF and after removal of all work materials by wiping with a chemical disinfectant
7.11 The stainless surfaces are easily cleaned with household detergent and warm water. Be careful not to spray any liquid on the prefilter positioned behind the rear wall panel.
8.0 PRECAUTION
8.1 All personal protective equipment like aprons, gloves, masks, head caps, and shoe covers should be worn before using the instrument.
8.2 Clean the equipment with a dry piece of robe or a lightly moistened one, Do not use organic solutions,
8.3 Never use abrasive products or dissolvents.
8.4 Never pour water or liquids on the equipment.
