As with creatinine clearance, urine urea concentration, and urine volume are generally measured from a 24-hour urine collection, and plasma urea concentration is obtained from a blood test.
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR):
GFR is a measure of how effectively the kidneys are
filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood. It is considered the
best indicator of kidney function.
There are several equations used to estimate GFR, and the most commonly used one is the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation:
GFR (ml/min/1.73m^2) = 175 x (Serum creatinine)^(-1.154) x (Age)^(-0.203) x (0.742 if female) x (1.212 if African American)
GFR is the mean of Creatinine clearance and BUN clearance
The measurements for urine volume are expressed in milliliters (mL), and the urinary concentrations of creatinine and Urine Urea Nitrogen (UUN) are in millimoles per liter (mmol/L). On the other hand, the serum concentration of creatinine is in micromoles per liter (µmol/L), and the serum concentrations of BUN are in millimoles per liter (mmol/L).
