1.0 Purpose
This Standard Operating Procedure
(SOP) outlines procedures for treating pinworm infestations in rodent colonies.
2.0 Responsibilities
2.1 Veterinarian:
- Diagnose pinworm infestation and prescribe treatment.
- Determine treatment duration (5 or 7 cycles, 9
or 13 weeks).
- Conduct post-treatment tests.
2.2 Animal Facility Manager:
- Inform investigators, users, and staff of
infestation, treatment, and special procedures.
- Ensure treatment adherence to this SOP.
2.3 Animal Care Attendant:
- Supply medicated feed/water according to the
prescribed schedule.
3.0 Materials
- Barrier facilities: Irradiated medicated feed
containing 22% or 150 ppm fenbendazole.
- Conventional facilities: Regular medicated feed
containing 22% or 150 ppm fenbendazole.
- Alternative: Ivermectin sheep drench 0.08%.
4.0 Procedures
4.1 Movement Restriction:
- Limit animal transfers out of the positive room
(unless the receiving room is under treatment).
- Receiving animals in positive rooms remains
permitted.
4.2 Treatment Initiation:
- Begin treatment at staff convenience, minimizing
research disruption.
4.3 Treatment Scope:
- Barrier facilities: Treat the positive room and
potentially exposed rooms.
- Conventional facilities: Consider facility-wide
treatment.
4.4 Fenbendazole Medicated Feed:
- Provide medicated feed ad libitum on weeks
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, (11), (13).
- Offer regular feed on weeks
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, (12), (14).
- (*Treat for a minimum of 5 cycles, ideally 7.)
- Supply only 7-day portions to minimize waste.
- Leave uneaten medicated feed; supplement with regular
feed for the remaining 7 days.
4.5 Ivermectin Medicated Water:
- Prepare by mixing 1 part ivermectin drench with 99
parts water.
- Conduct a small-scale test for adverse reactions
before full implementation.
- Follow the same schedule as with medicated feed (7
days on, 7 days off).
4.6 Animal Husbandry:
- Attend infected animals last, wearing gloves and
designated gowns.
- Barrier facilities: No autoclaving of soiled
cages or regulated medical waste disposal is required.
- Conventional facilities: Consider occasional
cage autoclaving to break the recontamination cycle.
- Dispose of dirty bedding carefully to minimize
aerosols and contamination.
4.7 Post-treatment Monitoring:
- Wait at least 3 months before declaring a room
negative.
- Randomly test 10-20 weanling cages per room using
PCR.
5.0 Documentation
- Maintain records of treatment dates, medications
used, and test results.
6.0 Training
- Train animal care staff on pinworm
identification, treatment procedures, and safety protocols.
7.0 References
- Include relevant references or SOPs for detailed
medication preparation and handling.
